Ooni pizza ovens!!

GreatTeaMonkey · 20/03/2021 09:42

Inspired by the other pizza thread.

Who here owns an Ooni (or other pizza oven make). Any tips or tricks? DH loves making a beer dough which works really well.

He does have a habit of losing ingredients in the back of the oven. Grin

Oh, people keep talking about that 30p Tesco flour on the FB group I'm in. We don't have a big Tesco here but I was in a town with a larger one the other day and looked but they didn't have any, probably just as well then.

I've had this in mind to get for DH for Christmas (I'm a planner!) What is the general lead time for ordering? Is it longer at Christmas? Am thinking of ordering in September?

EastWestWhosBest · 15/04/2021 12:17

They can take their time.

I’d suggest signing up for a loyalty card at Lakeland. You always get discounts.

I’ve heard good things about the Roccbox

EventuallyDistracted · 15/04/2021 13:35

I ordered ours from Lakeland on 17 Dec and it was despatched that day, but within a few days the website was saying "more stock expected in Feb". So I wouldn't recommend leaving it that late. Definitely sign up for the loyalty card, they regularly send out a 20% off voucher for large purchases.

A shipment of them is stuck on the ship that was stuck in the Suez Canal apparently.

ittakes2 · 15/04/2021 13:39

Thank you also place marking!

EastWestWhosBest · 15/04/2021 16:12

I got mine from Lakeland with a huge discount. I was waiting for the vouchers to come but when they did it was a £50 off Ooni voucher (I think, I don’t remember for sure) plus a 20% discount on an order. I think I paid about £150 in total.

I've just got an oven - do I need a wooden and metal peel thingy? Am on a budget and hoping the metal one will be enough?

EventuallyDistracted · 19/04/2021 14:59

We only have a metal one. We've got a silicone baking sheet (about a fiver from Sainsburys) I prep on that, use the metal peel for in and out of the oven and then onto a chopping board to cut up.

DeclineandFall · 19/04/2021 15:04

We have had an uuni2 for 5 years ago. My top tip if you haven't had time to make dough, the Aldi ready made pizza dough from the chilled aisle makes great pizza in it as long as you have plenty of flour.

boredsolicitor · 19/04/2021 16:01

Brilliant - thanks so much . I hadn't thought of the silicone for prepping . Also ready made dough sounds good . DH bought this in a fit of enthusiasm and I'm not so keen so saving effort and ££ is good Smile

Anyone who fancies a bit of diy take a look at da malat pizza ovens.
We’re in the process of making one, can’t wait for it to be finished.

boredsolicitor · 21/04/2021 18:37

Just realised that ours is not an ooni but camp chef and you stick it on top the bbq - even more faff!!!

Roselilly36 · 21/04/2021 18:44

We have had our unni, before the name change. Used it loads, for charity fundraisers, and family pizza parties. DH has it down to a fine art, makes his own dough, pizza sauce etc. The pizzas are lovely and cook so quick. I would recommend.

AC12reject · 22/04/2021 00:10

Had one a few years, received as a present. Cook a steak in it.
Game changer!!

AC12reject · 22/04/2021 00:12

Oh yes, sainsburys ready made dough from the freezer is great for actual pizza and buy some polenta while you're there to stop if sticking.
We would never have bought the Ooni for ourselves but love it. Kids enjoy the faff too.

reprehensibleme · 22/04/2021 00:17

The family clubbed together to buy one for DH for Christmas - ordered October delivered early December.

Used it for the first time last week (Scotland - it's been chilly!) and it was great. When they say it takes 60 seconds they mean it - we left the first one in for about a minute and a half and the crust was a bit burnt. Second attempt worked great.

Ddad bought DH the Ooni metal peel without the handle for his birthday and it works well. DH (aka gadget man) bought a temperature gun thing to make sure the oven is up to heat and we've used cornmeal on the peel to stop the pizza sticking.

If you eat pizza once a week or more definitely worth it I think.

Titsywoo · 22/04/2021 00:21

We have a ooni koda 16. Love it. We make our own dough normally using the Pizzapp on our phones but if in a rush Northern Dough Co is good and you can buy in most supermarkets.

There is a knack to it definitely. Get the stone hot enough (we leave it 20 mins), get a good paddle for launching (we have bamboo ones from Amazon), use a sprinkle of semolina rather than flour on your paddle as it launches better and you don't get that burnt flour taste, once the stone is hot turn the heat down so the top doesn't cook too fast, make sure to turn the pizza regularly (a metal peel - they make turning peels for this purpose works best).

The best dough I made involves making a biga which is a bit like a sourdough starter but not sour! Ooni facebook groups are a mine of info.

imip · 10/05/2021 17:31

I am so glad to see this thread! Just got Dh an ooni for his birthday. He has made his own sourdough pizzas for years. He usually gets the base of the pizza on the stovetop so it is nice and crispy and then Into the oven. He uses semolina. Our oven is always messy, the floor is messy. He ain’t a clean cook, so I so glad to have an ooni.

Any other suggestions on what can be cooked in it?

user1471543094 · 27/07/2021 14:05

Just got a 20% voucher from Lakeland so placed my order today. Also bought the cover.

Ordered the Karu 12 and already regretting not going for the bigger one!

What are the other "essentials" I should get to go along with it? The baking stone is Unavailable - do I need this?

Utilityroomenvy · 27/07/2021 14:40

Your Ooni oven should come with a baking stone. I would say other essentials are a couple of bamboo peels for launching and a metal turning peel for when it is in the oven. A cast iron pan for trying other cooks. Tipo 00 flour for the dough. A laser thermometer for checking stone temp.
