Hello Dexter - sorry work’s getting you down. I must have missed that you’re leaving. It can really drag when you know you’re going. I worked three months notice at my last job and it seemed interminable. I ended up wishing I hadn’t told everyone I was leaving so soon. After a few weeks people started to look a bit baffled that I was still turning up

Just waiting for the man who’s coming to sort out our chimney stack - spotted there was a problem when horrible brown stains appeared on the walls of the only room I’ve managed to get looking really good since we moved in

I broke up yesterday at 4.30pm and not back in until Tuesday.
Mr Carnage is also off (except for Saturday. Ha!); so we are about to enjoy a beer in the conservatory 🍺.

DH and I have been having a long conflab...

We had a local (trusted) builder round to sort out what we assumed was a small problem with the flashing. Turns out the entire roof felt is a disaster (mould and rotting) and it, and all the battens, insulation etc needs replacing. That means all the tiles have to come off first, scaffolding etc. It’s a very big roof...No formal quote yet but when pressed for a ballpark he said £10 - £15K 😱

Mind you, he did say tiles were salvageable as if they hadn’t been they would have cost upwards of 80p each - and he estimates we have about 20,000 of them!

I am consuming a huge amount of Grasmere gingerbread which is supposed to be an Easter treat...

Midge, 19 isn't that long when you consider it only seems like 5 minutes since DH told me he'd got 30 pay packets left - and he's been retired a year next month! It will go quickly. It has to!

Oh @FlouncingBabooshka I feel your pain - we have a similar situation - we needed two chimney breasts rebuilding as well. They've nearly finished, the mess and the disruption has been as depressing as the cost!

Oh no FlouncingB. If it’s any consolation we’re in the same boat as you, perhaps even worse as we have stone slabs on our roof that weigh a ton and cost the earth as they’re so old. We’ve a wooden strut broken and the whole thing is sagging. The roof could take the whole house down if it goes. I think we need a structural engineer as well as builders. I keep putting off pricing it! Bloody hate being a grown up sometimes! Think we may end up selling the old stone roof tiles, sadly, and using slate or indian stone to replace it, which will bring costs down a bit.

It's depressing isn't it.

A young colleague purchased her first house last year - she was very excited and everyone was congratulating her.
