Your most disappointing meal

I'm on a healthy eating kick but Friday is "treat" dinner day. I decided to cook a massamam curry. Delicious right. Wrong! It. Was. BLAND! I'm so disappointed. I was looking forward to it all week and now just feel cheated.

Every curry I've ever tried to make from scratch.
At best they taste exactly like the ones I make with bought curry paste, at worst they're inedible.

@thefirstmrsrochester

Scallops with a caviar froth. 10th wedding anniversary dinner at Rogano, Glasgow. I had looked forward to this so much and it was less than ordinary. I was so disappointed.
I remember having a 3 course meal at The Rogano. An hour later I got a fish supper as I was still hungry😄

Had a Chinese takeaway the other week. Beef in spring onion and ginger. I had memories of something sizzling and fresh. Didn't expect it to still be sizzling. But also didn't expect it to be grey and covered with spermy gloop, tasting like I imagine prison food, with about 0.1g of freeze-dried spring onion sprinkled on top and no ginger at all. I threw it away.

Some years ago I went overboard picking blackberries, ripping my hands and forearms to shreds in the process. I made the usual crumble etc, then looked online for a savory recipe and found a video recipe - Pork with a blackberry crust - by a celebrity chef (can't remember which one). We had friends coming for dinner so thought I'd give it a go. It was disgusting. Flaccid meat coated in purple sludge. I'd also somehow managed to tread on a blackberry and tread it across the hall carpet. I got pretty drunk that evening.

I live close to a well known chain restaurant/steakhouse/pub, separated from us by a small field, the smell of grilling steak drifting over on weekend lunchtimes is truly mouthwatering and very tempting. Unfortunately each time I have caved and gone in there for a meal it has been disgusting, frozen shite I wouldnt feed to my dog, and believe me I am no culinary snob. Hasn't stopped me from caving more than once though 😳

Rainbows89 · 12/03/2021 23:38

I once had a meal in a restaurant which was pasta, tinned tomatoes and peas. In an Italian restaurant. I was 😳

Spottysausagedogs · 12/03/2021 23:42

Funnily enough I made chicken stew using proper chicken stock, veg spuds etc. Lots of onion garlic mustard herbs pepper.
Smelled amazing.
Bland as hell. Felt so cheated, got a KFC
😂

@Chimeraforce you just needed some chicken oxo in that, sorry Grin

Stayed in a lovely hotel in Sardinia many years ago. Food was ok the dessert was.....Vienetta! 😂

AC2022 · 12/03/2021 23:46

Rome 2007. Stopped in a rustic bistro on a side street and had the lasagne....turns out that Findus frozen lasagne is available in Italy too!

willibald · 12/03/2021 23:50

A Chinese takeaway even the dog wouldn't touch.

chouxfleur · 12/03/2021 23:50

I once ordered a starter which was supposed to come with homemade flatbread.

It came with some baguette which had been sliced length wise into long thin pieces. I guess it technically was flat bread but definitely not what I was expecting.

Was invited to a wedding in a 5* hotel in Dublin. Paid an absolute fortune to get there with flights and taxis, but consoled myself with the thought of the amazing food. Was invited to wedding eve dinner, wedding day (3 meals) and post wedding breakfast. I had to pay for meals apart from wedding reception. The food was terrible, I've seen better in IKEA. The chicken breasts had these really weird tendon things still visibly attached, they were supposedly stuffed with pesto but it was really bland green foam instead. To top it off there was a child beside me who got served chicked strips and chips and they looked amazing, I would have given my right arm for that plate. I was in such a bad mood throughout, my face was like thunder in the photos. Irrationally I was thinking of ending my friendship with the bride over it, I was really upset about it for - years a while after.

In Greece with some friends in our early 20's, one ordered a tomato salad, and was so shocked to be presented with a sliced tomato and nothing more, not even a drizzle of olive oil. She complained (very politely, more of an enquiry really, she's a lovely person) and was told off by a very grumpy waiter! I dont know, is that a thing in Greece? I've never heard of it anywhere else Confused

Chickpea curry, well the chickpeas more to the point, the curry I made tasted great but chickpeas are so bland! I’m trying to do meat free days and chickpea was my secret weapon to convincing my husband we don’t just need to eat beans on toast or a jacket spud on these days! He hated them so did I!

Does anyone know how to make them less boring? Are you suppose to soak them in some kind of marinade, we love hummus so I’m really gutted that I either messed it up or they are just always bland and boring

Sh05 · 13/03/2021 00:23

@zzizzer
Did you by any chance wash the bowl of your slow cooker in the dishwasher?
I did this once, made a really lovely looking curry in a non stick pan which I had washed in the dishwasher, the whole meal was ruined cos everyone could just taste the soap!

Sh05 · 13/03/2021 00:28

@Dogmum81
Wash and drain your tinned chickpeas.
Meanwhile in a tablespoon of oil heat some mustard seeds with curry leaves then add red chilli flakes, salt and tumeric powder ( a teaspoon each)
Squirt in half a tube of tomato puree and heat it through then add your chickpeas.
Layer this over some boiled baby potatoes and drizzle plain yoghurt over the whole dish.
Serve with some thing crunchy so lettuce or even salt n vinegar crisps.

We went to a local "gastro pub" that was very well regarded, rave reviews, booked a month in advance. My Mam found a fish bone in her peas - On a roast dinner!

Byeckythump · 13/03/2021 00:41

Went to a fancy restaurant. Main meal was sublime. Pretentious dessert was just called ‘chocolate truffle’. Turns out it was chocolate with actual truffle (from the ground), super strong fungus taste in dark chocolate ganache Envy it was completely inedible.

Edna311 · 13/03/2021 00:44

My birthday takeaway, yesterday. From the restaurant we went to last year on my birthday. I was worried that the menu would not translate to foil containers. Sadly, I was right.

wishes1111 · 13/03/2021 00:48

Went to Lake Como, tried the salt fish starter as recommended by family who had the house there.

We had salt fish starter to share then a pasta dish each followed by dessert and a bottle of wine shared between us both.

The salt fish came out whole and we're just pickled, had their eyeballs in, DH was gagging over the smell.

We paid about €200 for the meal 🤢

Rainbows89 · 13/03/2021 02:37

Chickpeas are awesome don’t give up.

I honestly bung them in with anything so I can’t advise because I just like them how they are.

Just try another recipe - BBC good food usually has some good ones.

Cupcakes are sooo disappointing! They look so beautiful and tempting and delicious but they're always always awful. When will I learn? Sad

We were in Poland and went for a meal. Our daughter ordered beetroot salad for her main, what arrived was literally a mound of grated beetroot. What made it even funnier was the fact she'd had borscht for her starter. They must have thought this girl really loves beetroot!
Housewife2010 · 13/03/2021 07:22

In a Moroccan style cafe I ordered a wrap that came with Pomme de Terre Gaufrette. As a potato lover I looked forward to their arrival. They were McCoys!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 13/03/2021 07:25

Heirloom tomato salad. It was the only vegetarian main on the me u. I thought it would be salad with leaves, tomatoes, other veg, maybe croutons.

Nope. It was a plate of raw tomatoes sans dressing.
