Anyone else looking forward to this? I know it's early but DD11 has been playing the songs all weekend and can't wait. Fingers crossed it can go ahead this year in some format.

Getting closer now!

mathanxiety · 13/05/2021 06:18

I listened to the entire Portuguese entry - so nice.

BiscoffAddict · 13/05/2021 07:52

I really liked Italy’s entry from last year and think had it been a normal year, it would have on easily.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 13/05/2021 08:01

I went to a preview event a few weeks ago (well online!) and we all voted. Malta won and I think the UK was top ten.

MrsGulDukat · 13/05/2021 08:28

I didn't know we had John Newman as the entry this year.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 13/05/2021 10:12

Yes - better song than last year too.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 13/05/2021 10:13

@BiscoffAddict - Iceland would have won last year imho. The same group are singing for them this year with a different, not as good, song.

OublietteBravo · 15/05/2021 10:03

I’d actually quite like France to win. Which feels... odd.

DD always supports Sweden and DS always supports Cyprus. But yesterday we found out that DD already had the entry from Cyprus on her playlist without even realising! Apparently I’m not allowed to tell DS Grin

SpindleWhorl · 18/05/2021 14:40

@MrsGulDukat

I didn't know we had John Newman as the entry this year.
I think it's his brother James Newman.

I'm a bit on the fence about the song.

OnlyheretovoteonAIBU · 18/05/2021 15:09

Joining the thread as I love Eurovision.

Although it’s not my personal favourite, I’ll be very surprised if Sweden don’t take the trophy as their entry is textbook Eurovision winner.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/05/2021 15:31

The Swedes take it very seriously. I think Mans Zelmerlow's winner from 2015 is my all time favourite.

Eurovision often results in a non textbook winner though!

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/05/2021 15:32

You're right @SpindleWhorl - I wasn't paying full attention.

OnlyheretovoteonAIBU · 18/05/2021 15:45

James Newman’s song is actually one of the better ones this year but he could have the best song in the world and he won’t win just because we’re so very unpopular with Europe (though Israel is probably more so now)

SpindleWhorl · 18/05/2021 15:56

@OnlyheretovoteonAIBU, I was talking to DS about this. The UK is automatically in the final, but will Israel get through the semi-finals in order to score even fewer points than us?

I read that Australia are phoning in their performance from lockdown Oz. Will that garner sympathy or not?

I agree that Sweden is a good, safe bet, musically and politically. 10/1 odds here.

FelicityPike · 18/05/2021 15:58

Iceland were robbed last year!

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/05/2021 16:25

The Aussie entry is not very good imho. I'll be surprised if they finish top 10. Mr Newman may get the best result we've had in years though.

I agree @FelicityPike!

OublietteBravo · 18/05/2021 16:31

Germany, Spain and Netherlands have automatic places in the final and aren’t really expected to score lots of points. Any one of them might finish below us.

(As an aside: if we’d sent Germany’s entry, we’d definitely have finished last).

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 18/05/2021 16:40

I think Switzerland's entry is lovely this year, and so is Ireland's (although I don't really like the staging - I've been watching the rehearsal clips on youtube).

I'd love Iceland to win this year, they're such a lovely group.

Oh, and if anyone fancies doing a (free) fantasy eurovision league thing, registration closes just before the semi final opens later on.

I quite like Germany’s song, very catchy chorus Grin
OublietteBravo · 18/05/2021 16:51

I don’t have a problem with Germany’s song. I just know it would’ve suffered for “treating Eurovision as a joke” if it’d be the U.K. entry.

InglouriousBasterd · 18/05/2021 16:58

I found my people (again - it seems I commented in March, as is my Eurovision dedication!)

Loving the French entry actually - I think it’s favourite at the moment? Iceland were robbed last year so I’ll be chucking them a vote because they deserve it! I hope Malta do well and don’t come up against race problems - Russia in particular tend to not vote for black acts, disgustingly.

U.K. song isn’t bad!! And way better than last year’s (horribly aptly named) song. He’s been doing press as well which is essential and often ignored by the U.K. act.

OublietteBravo · 18/05/2021 17:05

I’m expecting Ukraine to do well. It’s not mainstream, but surprisingly catchy. Much better than last year’s entry by the same group.

Also expecting San Marino to comfortably make it out of the semis - can’t ever remember thinking that before!

Dark horses include Belgium, Portugal (singing in English) and Albania. None of which are certain to get out of the semis.

I have France, Malta, Slovenia, Estonia and Albania in the family sweepstake. (Somehow I always manage to pick the ones in the dreaded second slot)!

Checking in, ridiculously excited for Saturday 🥳
Good luck to Mr Newman!

SpindleWhorl · 18/05/2021 18:54

So it's BBC4 at 8pm? I'll be there.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/05/2021 19:53

I like the Swiss entry - reminds me of A-Ha.
