Keratosis pilaris - any tips?

I’ve had this most of my life (now 50) and I’m tired of it. Bumpy, lumpy unattractive skin on the tops of my arms, thighs, arse, and there’s no sign of it going. Apparently there’s no ‘cure’ but you can improve the look of your skin, and I wondered if anyone had found any good remedies? Scrubbing seems to make mine worse Hmm

Ameliorate cream (avail Amazon or Sainsbury's, poss elsewhere). About £20 for a tube, but only need a little for the problem areas. Body lotion consistency. You see the effect after a couple of days - much smoother skin. If you stop using for a few days, the bumps come back.

Also, Flexitol Heel Balm works but smells much worse and is more like a toothpaste consistency.

Mine went away either due to pregnancy or bio oil.

Stop eating wheat and sugar. This cleared mine up.

Obviously when I began eating them again it came back.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 09/03/2021 12:39

@Cavagirl - I took it for anti ageing because I was having peri-menopause symptoms and wanted to give my skin, hair and body the best chance of being looked after. It has done nothing for my face or hair but my joints and KP are much better.

Dry body-brushing helps with mine - I have a round wooden brush from The Body Shop.

For me it's a bit like dry heels/feet though - if you don't keep it up then it comes back. I think consistency is key and exfoliating/moisturising is boring!

Sali Hughes wrote an article with suggestions a few years ago - as usual, some cheap and some expensive recommendations.

I've been using the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream on my kp and thats really been helping mine.

DefinitelyOdd · 09/03/2021 19:38

I agree about the Cerave SA moisturiser and using bar soap. I definitely notice it coming back if I stop using it.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/03/2021 19:41

Korean towel and creams with acids especially made for KP don't work for me. What works to some extent is just using VERY rich body creams. At the moment I'm using Neutrogena hand cream on my whole body and it helps. My arms are under control, but my thighs seem to get worse with age.
I was vegetarian for years and that didn't help. I have heard that giving up gluten or dairy can help, but both are not really options for me.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/03/2021 20:04

Sunlight is well known for improving it, but I would need temperatures over 30 to show my legs, and even then...
I've read about hair removal laser helping, but also that it does the opposite in the long term. Anyone else heard of this?

NannyGythaOgg · 09/03/2021 23:03

Vitamin D - getting mine optimal - rather than just in the bottom of the range - is the only thing that has helped mine.

I strongly suspect that it is the vitamin D our skin makes from sunlight is what has helped those that have said 'sunlight'

jenthehen · 09/03/2021 23:20

Mine went when I cut out gluten. I’m still gluten free and 5 years free of KP

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/03/2021 23:22

Mine went when I gave up gluten and returned when I reintroduced it.

MerryGoRoundBrain · 09/03/2021 23:32

I used to have really bad kp on my arms and also forearms. Soap instead of shower gel makes a massive difference. Also, bizarrely, soap and glory body butter (the original one) helps.
