Weird number ringing me

36 replies

I've had 2 weird calls today and both numbers are identical to mine aside from the last 3 digits. I answered the first call and they accused me of calling them just minutes earlier which is impossible as my phone was in another room!

They text a screenshot with my number showing I called them for 40 seconds but my recent calls don't show this?!

I've just had another call which I didn't answer. The WhatsApp picture looks like a legitimate couple but who knows.

Has this happened to anyone recently?

I keep getting this. It’s driving me nuts. I googled it when it first started happening and discovered it’s called a neighbourhood scam. Scammers are checking your number works, think you’re more likely to answer a familiar number and you can’t block them as they have literally every number available to use.

I answered on my mobile the second call (missed the first) and there was no one there. I now get endless calls from mobile numbers like mine and London numbers for some reason.

It’s infuriating. I wish these low lifes would find something productive to do and that whichever country they’re calling from would crackdown on this nonsense.

I had a call from a number where the number was the same but last 3 different too. I ignored it and they left no message. Must be a spoofed number or something! I wonder, had I called it back, if I’d get a bewildered innocent on the other end too?

GinWithLime · 06/03/2021 05:08

@HurryUpSunshine

Just block them 🤷🏻‍♀️.
I blocked the first number right after yet still had a second call on a similar number a few hours later so this doesn't actually achieve much.

Sounds like a glitch in the matrix!

Rememberallball · 06/03/2021 10:09

@GinWithLime

But what are they achieving? I have to know Grin

I've blocked them both, let's see if I have anymore...

I’ve had this a couple of times recently. Usually it’s a number masking feature for scammers abroad to make it look like it’s an ‘ok’ or local number calling you meaning you’re more likely to answer - and, if you call back (as you did), the number is genuine and belongs to someone as mystified as you!!

I was waiting on a call from a customer services place a few days ago, so answered one of these, it was a recorded message saying there were fraud transactions on my NI account and I needed to take action to prevent further fraud. Obviously I hung up, and then noticed that it was only three digits different to my number. I assume it was a cloned number and if I had called it back I would have got a confused innocent party like the OP who couldn't understand why I was saying they had called me.

I'm now getting fraud calls from HMRC and all sorts. Thank goodness the call I was waiting on actually called me yesterday so I can stop picking up unfamiliar numbers now!

Have you signed up with TPS? It's free.

I was getting loads of scam/spam calls and signed up with them about a month ago and don't really get any now. According to their website it takes about 30 days to take full effect (and it won't block out every single call) but it's made a huge difference for me.

You can also set your phone not to ring unless it's someone from your contact list.

HelenDrinkwater · 06/03/2021 11:55

Me too, twice now. I've blocked them. Identical scenarios

TitusPullo · 06/03/2021 12:16

@sunflowersandbuttercups - scammers do not take any notice of the TPS, I’ve been registered for years and still get these calls. What they are doing is fraud so they don’t really care about the toothless TPS who can’t even stop legitimate companies cold calling half the time.

Oh, I know it doesn't stop them completely, but for me it's cut them down considerably.

It won't do any harm to sign up, anyway.

All very strange. This week a friend of mine had a call. Supposing to be from me using the land line at my empty holiday house. She was surprised as it is in a different country. When she rang it there was a message that the line was faulty.
I checked the CCTV and it hasn’t been broken into. I’ve rung that phone, it’s working and no one answered!
