Renewing UK driving licence with non-UK passport ?

Has anyone done this recently?

I have a UK driving licence which is expiring soon, but my passport is not a UK passport (European country).

For info, this is the same nationality passport I had when I got my UK driving licence. My original European licence was exchanged for a UK one ages ago, then renewed the normal way 10 years ago.

I assume this is brexit related, but no idea really.

The DVLA's website only says you need a UK passport and, helpfully, their helpline just says they are receiving lots of calls so call some other time. Which I have done on 3 different days now Hmm.

Thanks all!

You can only renew online if you have a uk passport - the DVLA can use the same photo. They do not have the same access to passports from other countries.
You have to renew by post and I think the forms are available at main post offices.

I suspect you may not be able to renew it online if you don’t have a U.K. passport - probably Brexit related. If you can get to a Post Office I think you can renew it there, and might be quicker than waiting for DVLA to answer calls.

It’s not Brexit related, it’s always been online for uk passport holders only

stickygotstuck · 26/02/2021 11:29

Thanks both!

I'd have liked to avoid a trip to my local PO, as it's practially an all day job, ridiculous place Sad. But it's probably the only option. Tempted to drive further afield though...

Ypu used to be able to order the forms online... That was a few years ago I did that.

Hmmh, pretty sure I renewed the last one online. But I could be wrong, memory's not great and I had a non-sleeping baby at the time.

But it's a renewal, not a new issue. They already have all my details, have had them for years. And I really don't think the PO has any better records, but maybe they do.

But anyway, will give the Post Office a whirl, fingers crossed.

Yes OP you need to get a D1 form from the Post Office. Had to do this recently for my dad, he did need to provide some extra documentation including his passport but it was all done within 2-3 weeks.

Also I have found its easier contacting the DVLA through their live web chat service rather than calling them.

Thanks for the tip Elopelo.

I've just done mine I have on passport. not all post offices do it so check first.
I would normally prefer to walk bare foot on broken glass than go in a P.O but you have no choice.
I amazed at how good and easy it was granted it cost £4 more but they do your photo.
All I did was go in with letter that arrived and old licence . They scanned letter and licence nothing to fill in . Went in booth they took picture and uploaded it to dvla there and then .

Xerochrysum · 26/02/2021 12:28

I've done it, it was very easy. I just had to go to the post office that do the service, not the local small one. But it was done really quickly including photo taking, and it was no fuss, not an all day job at all, even the post office was quite busy.

stickygotstuck · 26/02/2021 13:33

Thanks rwalker.
I would normally prefer to walk bare foot on broken glass than go in a P.O - my feelings exactly!

Thanks Xerochrysum, 'unfortunately' my local PO do do it. Worst part, I forgot they have to take your photo there and then. Oh well, another 10 years of looking like a Most Wanted sign Sad.

Encouraging to hear at least that it was fast and painless.

Do not send any paperwork to the DVLA for the foreseeable future , you will never see it again. Find a post office that takes the photos (not all do), that's the only way at the moment.

stickygotstuck · 26/02/2021 13:40

Thanks murbblurb, PO it is.
