Avoiding dry socket

Had a tooth out today - a horribly broken and dead old molar that was only ever going to cause infection so good riddance I guess!

I've not had a tooth removed since I was a child and needed braces but I did have an abscess last week and I'm keen to avoid that pain again! So how do I avoid dislodging the blood clot in the extraction site? I'm scared to eat or drink anything and I'm starving!

Yeah well when I say eating normally, I haven't been eating crisps or nuts or anything. Things like jacket potatoes or chicken with noodles. And lots of yoghurts!

@MrsDThomas and @Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername how are you getting on?

I seem to have avoided dry socket hopefully - a week post extraction today! although I've had niggly pain ever since and been taking paracetamol but nothing too serious. I've been cleaning with salt water rinses but today I got some bread stuck in the hole and decided I would give it a good clear out because I'd had a bad taste in my mouth. So I used a calpol syringe to flush out the hole gently (aimed at the tooth beside the hole not into it) and all this rank smelling white stuff came out EnvyI now have a hole in my gum again but I'm hoping it's ok. I have been so stressed this week by caring for this hole in my mouth!

Oh I've missed so many posts...I haven't had any notifications. @MrsDThomas that sounds awful. I think I'd have probably passed out. That doesn't sound too clever either @GreenSlide....so sorry to hear you're still going through the wars with it, even though its not there Grin. Luckily, I seem to have come through everything unscathed. A lot of pain post extraction, but nowhere near as bad as pre extraction. Swollen face for a good 3/4 days afterwards, and I'm now swilling with Corsodyl/Listening instead of salt water. I'm very wary when eating though...and still eating on the other side of my mouth. I have it in my head that salted crisps are good for me at the moment because of the salt !!!

Hello! Well i went to work on Wednesday, got bored in Tuesday being on the sofa feeling sorry for myself 😂 I wanted something to do but all i do is type and answer the phone.

I’m taking less painkillers. 2 nurofen at 7 this morning but im ready for more now. The area is sore, i think im over the worst. Mash and chicken for tea, chew on one side so it will get cold before I finish!

Im scared of eating crisps. really scared.

Am ok for wine?!

corsodyl mouth wash. DH got dry socket 3 times in the same wound, they honestly couldn't believe it, third time they recommended the mouth wash as salt and water wasn't working.

I hope you haven't opened it back up and ed up with dry socket. It's awful. I sneezed really hard and must have dislodged the clot about 4 hours after my extraction and got dry socket, my god it hurt. Ended up with going back and having it packed with something containing clove oil. Relieved the pain very quickly but I hate the smell of clove oil and hard a hard time not gagging due to smell. food used to get trapped in there for a few months, but it's finally healed and flat.

Me too @FedUpAtHomeTroels! But if you could smell the stuff that I spat out, Holy Ghost a dead animal would smell better...so I don't think I've dislodged anything that should have been there anyway?
