School system in Australia

Completely odd question I know but when does the school year start and which birthdays are the oldest/youngest in the year?

I know it's not September. Trying to work out when my ds would start on our imaginary move down under 😂😂😂

So where I from in Oz, school year runs Feb to Dec. My birthday is in June and I was one of the oldest in my class. My cousins birthday is in March, same age, and she was a grade ahead of me until we were 9. She was held back a year as she was one of the youngest in her class and it was seen as a disadvantage to her as she got older.

I'm in NSW. As others have said, the school years runs late Jan/early Feb through to December. Most kids go to Kindergarten when they are 5 turning 6 but if your child is born in the first half of the year you have the option to send them at age 4 turning 5.

Using my 2 eldest kids as an example:
My eldest son's birthday is in April and he was definitely ready for school so we sent him to Kindergarten when he was 4 and he turned 5 in April. However, if we had felt that he was not ready we could have waited a year and sent him at 5 and he would've turned 6 in kindergarten. He is the youngest in his year and has classmates that are more than a year older than him. The oldest child in the year was born in January the year before him.

My second son was born in November so we didn't have a choice of when to send him. He had to go to Kindergarten the year that he was turning 6, so he was one of the younger ones, but there are still some kids younger than him because they were born the year after him.

So there's potentially an 18 month difference between the oldest and youngest; oldest kids would be born in Jan and the youngest could be up to June the following year.
