I'm curious, do you cost out your meals and balance out low / higher cost meals through the week. Reading threads on here I am always shocked by the variation in spending on food, a cheap meal for some is an expensive meal for others.
We are a family of 4 with two teens, all home at the moment so our food bill covers all meals ........I cook from scratch and waste very little. Currently shop in Morrisons and Lidl and on average we spend £80 per week including toiletries and wine (no pets). This time of year we eat a lot of stews/curries / soups / pasta dishes / homemade pizza and roast dinners.
I have just made a huge pot of chicken chilli and decided to cost it out per serving. There must be at least 8 generous portions there which will work out @ £1.05 per serving (plus about 20p each for rice).

(1 kg chicken thigh fillets, onions, frozen peppers, red kidney beans, tinned tomatoes, garlic, chilli and spices = £8.40)

About £2.00 probably. Lasagne and garlic bread.

Tigger001 · 30/01/2021 18:55

No idea, home made cottage pie with broccoli, cauliflower and green beans.

Can't see it being more that £1 or so each.

Sally2791 · 30/01/2021 18:55

@Stovestopespresso- great idea to buy different stuff and work with it-I should do it more, I get lazy and stick with what I know. Luckily my children are adventurous and will try anything at least once!

but I am awed by families who eat amazingly for next to nothing and think maybe i should rein it in a bit. so, more potatoes and rice to bulk things up i guess. sigh. so blaaaand

trilbydoll · 30/01/2021 18:57

DH and I had Gousto so about £3 each, we get a box every 8 weeks or so to get some new ideas and recipes we can recreate. Kids had chips and chicken nuggets so about 20p probably! They've had 2 Gousto meals this week and to be fair ate a decent amount, which is much more adventurous than they usually are.

We have been spending £80 a week in Asda but we've got so many tins / jars / pasta in the cupboard I'm going to try and spend as little as possible while we work our way through it.

carolinesbaby · 30/01/2021 18:57

Leek and potato soup and bread.
About 50p per person?!

Gwenhwyfar · 30/01/2021 18:57

Lunch - three slices of bread, two slices of cheese and one egg. No idea how much that cost.
Dinner - half a Dr Oetker pizza, cost 3 euro something (I'm in a place where food is more expensive than the UK)

Half of yesterday's prosecco, a chocolate pudding bought as part of a set, one cappuccino from a sachet and cups of tea.

Just me.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/01/2021 18:58

@Reachersloveinterest

That's your main meal?
rhowton · 30/01/2021 19:00

Aldi pulled pork for £2.99 with M&S brioche buns for £2.50 with cheese and salad. Maybe £3 per portion.

CinnamonStar · 30/01/2021 19:01

I don't cost out per meal usually, but I will give it a go for our main meal today and tomorrow.

Vegetables £1.30+60p+8p
Meat/protein £2.90
Potatoes etc 60p

Pinch of herbs, pepper, salt, oil- I don't know, so will cost that as 5p total.

Total £5.53
Per portion £1.38

Tomorrow

Vegetables 24p+60p+85p+25p (onions, carrots, mushrooms, cabbage)
Potatoes 60p
Beef shin @ 75p per 100g - about £4.50
Bacon lardons 83p
Beef stock cube 20p
Bottle of Guinness £1.70

Cooking oil, salt, pepper, mustard, butter, dried herbs - 10p?

Total £9.87
Enough for 2 meals with the addition of more potatoes/ rice (add another 60p) so per portion £1.31.

AnaisNun · 30/01/2021 19:02

I think about £2.45 each?

DS and I had breaded chicken breast goujons (£4) pasta (20p maybe?), carrots (10p) and sweetcorn (60p) (random assortment as using up fridge bits).

Stovetopespresso · 30/01/2021 19:02

@Reachersloveinterest i need toxstart cooking that for our lunches, not sure it would stand fpr feeding 5 hungry mouths though as a main meal!

SecretWitch · 30/01/2021 19:02

No idea. We spend about $150 a week on food for two adults and one teen.

Tonight we are having pizza from a local place, about $40.

mum2bin2021 · 30/01/2021 19:02

I'd estimate about £4 each, we're having Waitrose chilli king prawn pizza with homemade sweet potato fries. This thread is strangely interesting Blush

CormoranStrike · 30/01/2021 19:02

About £1.75 - baked potatoes with bacon and cream cheese

Twinkie01 · 30/01/2021 19:03

£30 for dominoes pizza for the 4 of us. Got stuff in for dinner but can't be arsed to cook. I'm not keen on dominoes but the rest love it.

TheGonnagle · 30/01/2021 19:03

Tonight is curried fish pie with lovely lovely king prawns for three so....
About £3 each?

IMissFrance · 30/01/2021 19:03

£3.15ish.

Was fresh salmon so that's why maybe a bit pricey per person.

dailybriefing · 30/01/2021 19:04

Homemade pasta and garlic bread - no idea how much the flour was as bought in bulk
Eggs from chickens
Herbs and garlic from garden
Bacon 2.50
Cheese 1 ish
Salt and pepper

About 75p inc flour and yeast ish between 6

Peanutbutteryogurt · 30/01/2021 19:04

I don't cost out my meals, I spend £70-80 a week on the food shop. I make a meal plan and it always seems to end up costing about the same.

DP and I are having steak tonight, bought separately from the shop and dp bought them so I don't know how much they were.

carolinesbaby · 30/01/2021 19:04

Yes it's our main meal.
It was filling and delicious. Home made soup with potato, leek, onion and some single cream, home made bread still a bit warm, real butter.
Cost very little and fed two adults and two children happily.
What's wrong with that?

BertieBotts · 30/01/2021 19:04

The DC had half of an instant pasta meal thing each, so 80 euro cents per portion.

Not sure what DH and I will have yet. Maybe frozen pizza which is about €2 per portion.

I keep meaning to cost up different meals that we eat actually and try and work it into the meal plan. But I think our grocery bills aren't pushed up by meals really, but things like snacks and branded drinks.

TheGonnagle · 30/01/2021 19:05

I shop all online, Ocado or Waitrose, my shopping bill is between £120/£150 a week for the three of us.

TheGonnagle · 30/01/2021 19:06

Oh sorry, I pressed send half way by mistake and my messages are miles apart- fast moving food thread!

icytravels · 30/01/2021 19:07
