My ewe is standing up now

We had a ewe down with listeriosis. We've been dosing her with antibiotics and energy drinks, lifting her up and turning her for three days now. Tonight she can stand on her own. It's a miracle. I might just be posting to myself but what a relief.

What great news derxa, well done you and ewe! Good luck with the lambing. I remember you posted a photo of some of your sheep not too long ago, wonderful to see! 🐏 🐏 🐏 🐏 🐏 🐏 🐏

@derxa

Thanks. She's expecting triplets. Because of the good grass this year a lot of our ewes are due triplets and four are expecting quads Shock Unheard of
Is that the effect of the grass on the ewes or on the tup? :o

And thanks to the mention of energy drinks, I'm now imagining sheep with wiiings.

What a lovely thread. Apart from being pleased for the OP and her ewe, I'm delighted by the idea of there being an 'International Wool Secretariat' in Ilkley. It somehow sounds like an invention of Alan Bennett.

plinkplinkfizzer · 14/01/2021 01:26

I totally agree there must be photos and lamb updates from M N resident farmer . Pleease .

maggienolia · 14/01/2021 06:54

Lovely story. Best of luck for the n-ewe arrivals.
Can we have a playlist for her? Suggest "Ewe make me feel brand new"

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 14/01/2021 06:56

You are never alone when it comes to sheep 🐑 🐑

Glad your beastie is doing well Flowers

derxa · 14/01/2021 06:59

@Howmanysleepsnow

Amazing! So pleased for you both. Please keep us updated on her lambs if you have time. What energy drink did she have?
It's not strictly an energy 'drink'. It's from the vet - Ketosade. But our shepherd gave her Berocca which is a hangover cure (fizzy tablets with vitamins and minerals) I will try and post lamb pictures in March

Lovely news, it’s sounds like you’re going to have your hands full 😍 and lamb pics would be fab
My parents used to help their friends at lambing time and I know my mum misses the bottle feeding (so I can always fed-ex her to you Grin)

SaskiaRembrandt · 14/01/2021 07:36

That is good news! I'll be watching the thread for photos of lambs, so don't be sheepish about posting them

Goingtogetflamed · 14/01/2021 07:39

This has made my morning. Thanks to all of ewe, OP and PPs. A genuinely delightful thread.

She would be very welcome because ironically I hate bottle feeding lambs. it's a pain in the bloody arse. Ewe up and walking this morning but a bit staggery. Weather outside is going to be hellish this morning. I hate snow.
OP posts:
FamilyOfAliens · 14/01/2021 07:45

Hope the snow doesn’t last long, OP.

I think we forget how physically demanding farming can be and how you can’t just pull a sickie - your animals depend on you. The rewards (in March) will be worth it though Smile

I love this thread 😍

Awww bless her and bless you. We have ponies and yard owner has a couple of pet sheep. Last winter a couple of dogs got in with them, killed one and the other was absolutely traumatised, a few wounds but more shock, we thought we would lose her but she managed to rally after a week. Its such a relief when a sick animal makes it.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/01/2021 07:59

Pleased to hear it.

I have a volunteer job on a working farm which is also a registered educational charity. I take school groups on farm tours and teach them about farming although I usually take the Early Years groups and it's quite basic. Obviously lambing is the best time and if their are any hand reared lambs (called cade lambs here) we are allowed to cuddle them. Lamb cuddling is the most wonderful thing. Unfortunately I haven't been there since March last year and really miss it, I'm not sure I will get there for lambing this year as schools won't be organising visits any time soon.

Their = there

frumpety · 14/01/2021 08:03

Excellent news about the Ewe Smile Quick question , do you have to get all the ewes scanned so you know how many lambs they are carrying ? Do you do it or does a vet or someone else ?

That's horrific. We had some sheep 'worried' a couple of years ago. One sheep had terrible injuries and despite all efforts she died. More of shock rather than anything else. We farmers are lucky in that we work from home in the fresh air. We can escape the hideous Covid world for a while.

We're very lucky. Our shepherdess is a professional scanner. That's her main job. She's scanned everything including her own pregnant friends! She hates llamas and alpacas. Spitting buggers!

CosmicVagina · 11/03/2021 15:52

Do you have any lambs @derxa? I've been watching the thread waiting for pictures Grin

Easterbunnygettingready · 11/03/2021 15:55

Was hoping this thread would take off like Alan's duck thread!
Ewe - hoo op, hope your girls are doing well!!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/03/2021 16:55

@derxa
I assume you are over you ears in work, but:
If I have understood correctly sheep have the inbuilt abilitiy to fit their numbers to the food available? Which is a great trait.
