Swimming pool. Yay or nay?

Having spent so much time at home including during all of the glorious weather we had last spring and summer, we're thinking about putting a pool in the garden. We've got the quotes etc, just worried about all of the advice that it will devalue the house. Has anyone built a pool and regretted it? Thanks!

I had an indoor pool. It was dreadful. The house constantly smelled of chlorine, even with the door closed the smell still seeped everywhere. The water evaporated and the walls and ceiling got mouldy, even with good ventilation. Plus it was a money pit. I had it filled in and it was much better as just a dining room. I wouldn’t have an indoor pool unless it was in a separate pool house. I might have an outdoor pool if I could afford to maintain it.

We talked about this with friends last night who have an outdoor one (UK)

They pay an independent chap to open it in April and close it in October (total £400)

They also pay him £65+vat fortnightly to do the maintenance of chlorine etc.

On top of that is the heating. They calculated overall costs for the summer = £2500.
