McDonalds drive thru - totally not an essential journey......

My DC love McDonalds and haven't had it in months. And love Katsu Curry. And want to try these new katsu nuggets.

Our closet McDonalds is 25 minutes away. So we can't get delivery and one of us picking it up means it's cold and crap by the time we're gone.

DC not had McDonalds since at least October. I so want to say "yes sure, let's do it tomorrow" as they've been amazing all week considering the new lockdown - but driving the whole family in the car for just a McDonalds seems like it's not much of an essential journey.

Expecting a mix of MN "don't be so stupid, McDonalds is disgusting, stay home and et lentils you dickhead" and a mix of "don't be so stupid of course you can drive to McDonalds you dickhead"

So interested to see which I get more of.

Not essential. I don't think it's Pearl clutching horror to go though and wouldn't be bothered by someone doing this. Be prepared for a long wait though - drive thru McD are v busy at the mo.

I wouldn’t go only because I don’t like McDonalds, not because it’s not essential. Most of what we eat is not essential to the continuation of our lives.. It’s something to look forward to and get you through lockdown... it’s not exactly “risky”... what’s the problem?

My friend worked at McDonald's and has just quit, because one of her colleagues was asked to come to work while waiting for test results because they were so short staffed. Her symptoms were fatigue, a bit of a cough and a little breathless. The manager said it was fine as they wore masks.

She tested positive.

Their attitudes to this situation suck. I wouldn't go near.

I dunno. Risk wise it seems alright to me - you’ll all be in the car and other than paying (by card?) and taking a bag of food from an employee there’s limited interaction. The broader point is that you (well, all of us who go to McD’s, including me) contribute to McD employees coming in to work and their kids going in to school, and McD’s suppliers staying open in their factories, and their hauliers, and the admin behind that, and petrol attendants etc being in greater demand as we use fuel, and car mechanics and and and. It depends where you want to draw the line.

I did click and collect Wagamama’s last night :) I’m .2miles out of Deliveroo otherwise I’d ask them to deliver.
Working and homeschooling I was shattered - it was lovely :) essential journey probably not but we had to eat & we all to (lazy) tired to cook!

It's twenty five minutes away....I just don't see how you could say that was an essential journey. I got stopped by police coming home from work yesterday. Look at the news story about the two women fined for driving five miles for a walk round a reservoir.

I do think though that each family has to weigh up what's an acceptable risk for them. If you think the benefit outweighs the risk then it's katsu nuggets for tea!

@LindaEllen Most McDonalds branches in the UK are franchises, so it’s very likely that was a decision made by the local owner or manger rather than their company policy.

Get your kids a treat, ya dickhead! I feel sad that people even have to question these sort of life decisions (not a criticism you, OP, just an observation of the utter madness we live in presently)

25 mins drive is quite a few miles. I don't think that would be considered a local or essential journey.

I'm all up for using services that have been told they can operate, but I wouldn't drive that far for the sake of mcds. 5-10 mins then I would.

Can't you find somewhere nearer? KFC? Burger King? Local chippy?

DH, DD and myself just went to McDonalds drive-thru with a massive order...only to get home and discover that the only thing they forgot to pack were my nuggets!

In my opinion, driving back just for the nuggs would be a non-essential journey so I'm sat here hungry watching DD and DH stuff their faces

I know full well it's a typo and you meant "closest".
It just sounded a bit black market, given the context.

If it's open, presumably it's legal to go. I know we're being told not to leave our area (which for us is a very small town), but as regards eg people in cities, I'm guessing they could drive for 25 minutes without leaving the city. And people in residential suburbs may have to drive that length of time to get to the shops (I used to).
As usual, HMG seem to have left us to guess how big an "area" is.

As for the food being cold, have you any insulated containers or a hot water bottle?
My Christmas beef stayed hot for an hour wrapped in two layers of foil and a bath towel.

If you’re not using the car otherwise, the essential bit of the journey could be the drive to charge up the battery in case of emergencies. But if you’re driving regularly anyway, why not hang on until you can swing past when the car is already out?

I'd go and ours is 45 minutes drive away. However, so is the supermarket and we have to go there anyway. Shopping in the village shops only is getting unaffordable.
