McDonalds drive thru - totally not an essential journey......

GWLTM · 09/01/2021 12:59

But

My DC love McDonalds and haven't had it in months. And love Katsu Curry. And want to try these new katsu nuggets.

Our closet McDonalds is 25 minutes away. So we can't get delivery and one of us picking it up means it's cold and crap by the time we're gone.

DC not had McDonalds since at least October. I so want to say "yes sure, let's do it tomorrow" as they've been amazing all week considering the new lockdown - but driving the whole family in the car for just a McDonalds seems like it's not much of an essential journey.

Expecting a mix of MN "don't be so stupid, McDonalds is disgusting, stay home and et lentils you dickhead" and a mix of "don't be so stupid of course you can drive to McDonalds you dickhead"

So interested to see which I get more of. Grin

you can still complain about individual franchises id whisteblow the lot of them

but as for driving to get one you might aswell gthe amount of cars still on the road-they cant all be going t work or get food

pringlebells · 09/01/2021 19:37

We did, I'm pregnant and was worn out (only 7 weeks) and had a long hard day at work and DH suggested McDonald's. 10 minute drive away and we didn't get out the car etc. I'm glad we did, made a crappy week seem a little less crappy and I loved my big tasty burger

Hearwego · 09/01/2021 19:38

I last went to McDonald’s back in the summer. To be honest the whole experience was quite stressful. They turned the whole car park into a drive -thru queue and people were queuing to sit in, with limited seating.
I do miss the days when you could just park up and go sit inside.

GabsAlot · 09/01/2021 19:41

im still annoyed they havent brought back the breakfast bagle but still kep adding new stuff to the menu

doesnt make sense

Sandunesandseashells · 09/01/2021 19:45

@Hearwego

The two women in Derbyshire got fined but they weren’t from the same household and sat down for coffee, in a park. I thinks that’s maybe why they were fined?
They didn’t get a chance, they pulled up in their cars a space apart and were immediately approached by several officers. They first thought was that there must have been a murder.
24HoursInPoliceCustody · 09/01/2021 19:46

@sunnysidegold

It's twenty five minutes away....I just don't see how you could say that was an essential journey. I got stopped by police coming home from work yesterday. Look at the news story about the two women fined for driving five miles for a walk round a reservoir.

I do think though that each family has to weigh up what's an acceptable risk for them. If you think the benefit outweighs the risk then it's katsu nuggets for tea!

And look at the press today of 3 squad cars full of coppers caught eating breakfast together in a cafe that is shut to the public.
24HoursInPoliceCustody · 09/01/2021 19:50

@ShanniKey

Have banned that crap in the house and in the car. My son is just starting to take up sport so I want him to be fit and not huffing and puffing as he runs between the fast food junk castles.

The thought of sitting in the queue for the drive through stops any desire to go.

Given that hospitals are now rationing icu beds, and starting palliative treatment earlier and running low on oxygen, I wouldn't be getting into the car and risking an accident for the sake of a McDonald's. Each to their own though.
But the NHS has been operating this way for years and I do not recall anyone caring about the state of it then?
Ebhc · 09/01/2021 20:19
@Ebhc
A dickhead cos I stopped for some chicken nuggets on the way home from Morrison's. Calm down.

No, a dickhead for telling OP to go for a 50 minute round car trip during lockdown to get chicken nuggets because 'they're nice'.
To treat her children during a time there isn't much else to look forward to and they wouldn't even be leaving the car? McDonald's IS open, it's not illegal to go. Don't call me a dickhead for that, get a grip ffs.

MrsDThomas · 09/01/2021 20:23

Just get it.

Put some shopping in a few bags and go eat. If you get pulled, you’ve been shopping.

Shitonthebloodything · 09/01/2021 20:24

I went today. Was about 10 mins out of my way on way home from work, too late to cook. It was very busy but a drive thru presents zero risk in my opinion so no regrets. Katsu nuggets were amazing, if it's still legal I'll definitely stop in for more next week.
If it doesn't mean making extra stops for petrol etc then I really don't see the issue, it's a much needed treat for the kids at the end of a shitty week. Hope you went and enjoyed it op.

Fennellathewitch · 09/01/2021 20:24

Yes it's hard to believe but some of us don't live in pissing distance of various takeaways, they are open so legal just go OP. Mine is right next to a the nearest supermarket and shock horror it takes me 25 minutes to get there too only but it's just Aldi and Home Bargains. Nearest 'you must have more money than sense '' supermarket is 40 minute away but I can't afford to shop there.

Furries · 09/01/2021 20:35

@WombatChocolate

Yes it becomes clear that people need to told and ordered not to do things in a much more prescriptive way...they cannot exercise any sensible judgement for themselves.

That's why more shops will be closed down and meeting anyone from outside of a house will have to be banned. Some people will really suffer in terms of mental health, but because all those who just fancied a quick meet up, so basically didn't stay at home, it will be necessary.

And actually, even with people sticking to current rules, they probably aren't enough. The disease is rampaging. It will spread when people chatting at a doorway get too close. It will spread from children who've been in keyworker places at school return home and when people go the postoffcie and haven't washed their hands. It is spreading at a furious rate. The only way to not catch it is to stay at home and only see your own household. If that means not seeing anyone else for weeks and feeling miserable....that's what's needed. If it means a deterioration in mental health, that's what's needed.

Otherwise, do we need to all know several people in our street or family who have died, before we will say there is no alternative and my sufferings from staying at home are just smaller than this desaease spreading? The government will eventually rule on it ...but only when it's got a lot worse.

Blimey. That’s a flippant attitude to mental health right there. There are ways of expressing things, and that way is a pretty shitty unfeeling example.
user1487194234 · 09/01/2021 20:37

I would definitely go if I was you

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 09/01/2021 20:40

Hmm.
By keeping up with news from the other day.
You are ok to go out as a family.
You are fine using your car.
Maccies are still open, so you can go and buy food.
But you can't eat food out of the house. That's a picnic.
Go out, but stay home.
Wear a mask, but you dont need to wear one.

Furries · 09/01/2021 20:41
@Ebhc
Go. Katsu nuggets are nice but prefer normal ones.

FFS!

Do you (and many others on here) really have no understanding or appreciation that you are putting yourself and others at unneccesary risk with this sort of attitude and behaviour?
If you do have some understanding, then it's just incredibly incredibly selfish!
It's these attitudes and behaviours that have put us in this current crisis. and that will continue to keep us in this state.
I hope people behaving like this aren't the same ones complaining how long their children will be out of school, or complaining when they can't get urgent medical treatment when they, or a loved family member, has a heart attack etc or little Johnny falls over and needs stitches or his arm is broken etc etc etc.
There is a very direct corelation between the two.
Don't be that dickhead!
Mixing with others outside of the guidelines obviously increases the risks - and people should be more careful about this.

Taking possession of a paper bag of food through a car window is slightly different!

OP - if you’ve got an M&S near you, they do quite a nice Katsu sauce for cooking with when you do your at home version (though you’re probably not a shit cook like me and able to knock up a better version of your own!)

24HoursInPoliceCustody · 09/01/2021 21:32

@WombatChocolate

I was chatting to a friend who works at the local hospital last night. They don't have enough oxygen for all the patients so some go without. They don't have any intensive care beds and are having to ran sport people 150 miles and further every day. He stays beyond his finish time each day by 3-4 hours to help out as there just aren't enough staff. People are doing caring and medical roles they aren't qualified for to just help out. He said, you really wouldn't want to have a heart attack or find a lump now. Ambulances wait an hour to unload patients.

All of the Covid patients caught it somewhere. They either went out and caught it from others or people in their household went out and brought it back to them.

Quite simply, the fewer journeys out and the fewer people you can come into contact with the better. We are beyond 'just fancying it' and deciding 'it's within the letter if the law' - we just need to reduce our outings and contacts to the barest minimum. They say in Lomdon close to 30/100 have it. Many have no symptoms but will spread it and you could be one of them. Just do t take risks. It's as simple as that.

In other words just like every other day in the NHS and has been this way for years, so the Government have underfunded it and done nothing in years and this is the fall out from it.
BettyOBarley · 09/01/2021 22:02

DH is a recovery driver and fumes every day at people he's had to sit with in his cab (which is "Covid secure" but not really). Hardly any of these people are on "essential" journeys. Everyone thinks oh it's ok to just go visit my friend 20 miles away, it's ok to go fishing with my two mates in the car, it's ok to go 50 miles to buy my kid a puppy cos he's lonely in lockdown etc etc what harm can it do, but many people break down every day and each one puts people like DH and, in turn us, at risk.. so I think you're doing the right thing making it at home. It's not about living like hermits like some pp have said, but essential travel is pretty clear really. We can't pick and choose which bits of the rules we want to follow to suit ourselves, that's what got us into a third lockdown. (Not aimed at you op as I know you said you aren't going).

cyclingmad · 09/01/2021 22:22

@bettyobarley

Well he should know more than anyone its important for people to drive their cars a few times in a month and most definitely within 2 weeks like it explains here why:

We’ve heard many people say they let their cars sit for months in a garage with no problems, but you’re better off driving it a couple of times each month and for at least 10 miles, with some speeds over 50 mph if possible. You not only want your engine to get fully warmed up but for the entire car to get some exercise as well.

Letting a car idle for 10 minutes will get the engine up to normal operating temperature but accomplish little else. Driving the car for several miles wakes up the transmission, brakes, suspension, power steering, climate system (including the air conditioner) and all the fluids, seals and gaskets for those components that have been on a long snooze.

Batteries slowly lose their charge when they sit idle, and starting the car will drain it even more. That is one reason you want to drive several miles afterward, so the battery has a chance to recharge. If a car sits parked for a month or more, the battery may lose so much power that it will need a jump-start — or a charge before the engine will start.

So no i won't just leave my car and not drive it and then incur high costs to get it back running cos the battery is dead or have to change my tyres thanks to flat spots.

At least this means he has a job ir would you prefer noone driving and therefore no revenue for the company he works for which could result in him losing his job

MadinMarch · 09/01/2021 22:24

25 minutes drive is hardly local is it, so it could be argued that it is illegal.
Anyway, it'll probably be an irrelevant issue soon, as I expect the government will issue new more specific rules very shortly and close all the takeaways because people can't be trusted to make sensible decisions in the middle of this crisis.

BettyOBarley · 09/01/2021 22:28

@cyclingmad

Charge your car's battery while doing an essential journey like to the supermarket or whatever. Journeys that you're supposed to be doing right now. Problem solved.

cyclingmad · 09/01/2021 22:53

It clearly says more than 5 miles and my supermarket is under that, I walk there instead for my exercise. Plus to get to 50mph requires me using a different road than going to my supermarket and incidentally some of the A roads where its 50mph happen to have a mac D drive thru on it.

End of the day ill do what I need to to make sure my car runs fine cos I can't afford to throw hundreds of pounds at replacing tyres and batteries just because its not an essential journey when all im doing is driving and not having contact with anyone.

nickyschof · 10/01/2021 10:54

Apologies if this has already been said, but I’m sure that I heard that McDonalds were closing during the lockdown.
