McDonalds drive thru - totally not an essential journey......

But

My DC love McDonalds and haven't had it in months. And love Katsu Curry. And want to try these new katsu nuggets.

Our closet McDonalds is 25 minutes away. So we can't get delivery and one of us picking it up means it's cold and crap by the time we're gone.

DC not had McDonalds since at least October. I so want to say "yes sure, let's do it tomorrow" as they've been amazing all week considering the new lockdown - but driving the whole family in the car for just a McDonalds seems like it's not much of an essential journey.

Expecting a mix of MN "don't be so stupid, McDonalds is disgusting, stay home and et lentils you dickhead" and a mix of "don't be so stupid of course you can drive to McDonalds you dickhead"

So interested to see which I get more of. Grin

I'd say there's no difference driving 2 minutes or 25 minutes. You're not out or taking public transport - you're not even getting out of the car. It's fine.

I would go. I plan to do the same soon. We live 8 miles from a McDonald’s and no delivery so the only option is drive thru. YANBU.

They are open so imo you can go. Whether they should be open or not is a different debate but they are open... so go!

On a couple occasions we went to get take away during the first lockdown (if they are open). We live in the middle of nowhere with no deliveries here 🤣 so we have to go get it. It was a nice treat for DS’s birthday etc.

Limiting how far people travelling is to reduce the number of RTC’s and other accidents because if you were o have a accident you may have to wait outside hospital in an ambulance for most of the day waiting for a bed, it’s not necessarily about the risk of spreading the virus but reducing pressure on A&E. of course your safe from catching or spreading covid if confined in your car (with just members of your household) the same as your pretty safe going for a walk outside away from people.

DH has just been as it's our daughter's birthday and that is what she wanted to eat. Mind you, I would go anyway, if I fancied one.

They are open, so I assume the government has no issues with people using them. McDonalds is never essential, but whilst they remain open people have the right to use them.

It’s a non-essential journey, it’s outside your area, it’s taking the p*s out of everyone trying to control this epidemic. The fewer people that use these places, the more likely they are to close and let their staff go home.

Presumably you’ve been under less strict rules at some point in the last several months, but getting McD for DC didn’t seem important when you had other options?

Jeez, all these imaginary car accidents the OP is going to have on her trip to McD’s. Drive safely OP!

@Soutiner

You are not getting out of your car so I would just go and not give in to the scamdemic.

I assume you would be perfectly happy to go and care for COVID positive patients on ICU, @Soutiner - and as it is such a scam, you wouldn't need or want any PPE!

Well I'd just file it away under 'propping up the doomed economy' personally.

But then I spent over 3 hours yesterday driving in circles round the M25 sobbing the whole way round because I just can't take another 3 months trapped in the house seeing no one but my family so my interpretation of an essential journey is kind of skewed. But you have to have some joy in life even if it is chicken nuggets.

You can't see any other option?

They are open so imo you can go

That's not logical. On that basis, I could pop down to London because Euston Station is open.

I tried them last week, they aren't all that, you'd assume you'd get a match dip but you just get journalistic to normal nuggets
My first mcd in a year and bought the wrong thing 😢

@inastatus I didn't say she was going to have one, but there's an easy enough way to totally negate the risk. I think it's fucking selfish truth be told. You've got hospitals running low on oxygen, doctors starting palliative care early and deciding who to treat and who to leave to chance, , cancer surgeries being cancelled because no icu space, but op can do as she pleases for a fucking mc donalds? Pisses off with all the 'I know it's against guidance but I don't see why' lines. You don't see why because you're not the one choosing who to let die.

Chances of a car accident are small. Higher in cold conditions but small. Chances of catching covid or transmitting it also small. Agreed. But why keep taking little chances? It's not an essential journey but crack on and choose which rules to follow. Obviously the way forward. Maybe we should all do it.

I feel sad that people even have to question these sort of life decisions (not a criticism you, OP, just an observation of the utter madness we live in presently)

Same! Or if they do need to question it then not to post the question on Mumsnet.

Is McDonald's really worth 25mins of petrol?

Go for it, McDs seem to all be operating a drive thru at the moment (until recently you could order & collect on foot as well)

However, the queues are bonkers!

In our local area (SE London) the queue has spilled out onto the main road which in turn is causing traffic chaos, not to mention v dangerous for other drivers.

I am keen to know what the nuggets are like...alas, I think I might be disappointed with them

I was chatting to a friend who works at the local hospital last night. They don't have enough oxygen for all the patients so some go without. They don't have any intensive care beds and are having to ran sport people 150 miles and further every day. He stays beyond his finish time each day by 3-4 hours to help out as there just aren't enough staff. People are doing caring and medical roles they aren't qualified for to just help out. He said, you really wouldn't want to have a heart attack or find a lump now. Ambulances wait an hour to unload patients.

All of the Covid patients caught it somewhere. They either went out and caught it from others or people in their household went out and brought it back to them.

Quite simply, the fewer journeys out and the fewer people you can come into contact with the better. We are beyond 'just fancying it' and deciding 'it's within the letter if the law' - we just need to reduce our outings and contacts to the barest minimum. They say in Lomdon close to 30/100 have it. Many have no symptoms but will spread it and you could be one of them. Just do t take risks. It's as simple as that.

OP DS is on a sports scholarship and a county level runner. He eats McDonalds as s treat. Ignore the comments about it poisoning your children and making them ‘huff and puff’ that gave me a good laugh too Grin.

Take DC, enjoy one of the very few treats you can right now.

25 minutes away by car for junk food is not in the spirit of the lockdown never mind within the rules.
It’s up to you of course, I’m certainly not watching what other people are doing...it’s not within my control so I don’t much care...but if you’re asking, yeah yabu.

To make a 7 year old who can't do many of their other favourite things happy, yeah I think it could be.

Every case has caught it through people having contact with others. It is the little things like having a friend round for a coffee, walking with a larger group, going shopping and not washing your hands.

Yes, lockdown is hard and lots of people are really miserable. But honestly, look at the BBC website to see what's going on and get a bit of perspective and recognise people are asymptomatic and spreading it widely. You could spread it without knowing or get it without knowing and yes, your trip out might have made you feel a bit better and you might have it mildly, but who knows who else you've given it to without ever knowing it ...who might be in one of those queues in an ambulance outside the hospitals waiting to get in.

As an aside - Aldi did Katsu nuggets at Christmas so if there’s one bear you you could try them (they’re similar to the McDonald’s ones but honest not quite as good).

YABU to go to McDonald’s and not the chippy...
Although I say that because I live abroad and McD’s are 10 a penny all over the world. What I would give right now for proper British fish and chips or, even better, scampi and chips.
Enjoy your treat, OP.

I wouldn't worry. The way the infection numbers, ICU beds and deaths are rising, I expect more lockdowns in the next few days, and closure of takeaways etc is probably pretty high on the list of things that can be closed.
