Oil Central Hearing Cost

We are in the process of buying an older 2 bedroom property that has oil central heating. I have no experience of running costs or how often you ‘fill up’. I’m not sure of the size of the tank but there will be only two of us living there and we don’t have the heating on all day. The cooker is electric if that helps. Can anyone suggest a ball park figure please?

That definitely sounds like you’ve got an outside leak there - we normally do about 1500 litres a year in a 5 bed house - albeit one that’s very well insulated ! Although we do normally have the thermostat set at about 18 degrees . Once you go over 20 you might as well just burn the pound notes .

On a lighter note - my neighbour having built his house and moved in , filled his oil tank and then about 3 months later , came round to ask if we’d noticed anyone lurking about . We were suffering with oil thieves at the time, and his tank had gone from 2500 litres , to empty inside 10 weeks. It was only when he told his wife about it and that he’d called police , that she mentioned that every time he left for work , she’d whack the thermostat up to 28 degrees . She’d used the lot .

Yeah, we replaced some radiators, but TBH they were the ones that we had always felt to be undersized. ( Long story, bought house new and never felt that the plumber was much cop - the builder's son and we got another oil specialist to re-commission the boiler after about 12 months).
The ones we were recommended to replace were the ones we felt were inefficient.

“Once you go over 20 you might as well just burn the pound notes .“

Hmm... see, we might just have used it Blush lol

But I’ll definitely get him back for the smell in case...

“Yeah, we replaced some radiators, but TBH they were the ones that we had always felt to be undersized”

Yeah, see some rooms we could just get a bigger one... some rooms we’d need extra... and that’s what’s putting him off. Well that’s the bit I remember, he keeps speaking in engineer at me about it.

It really does depend on the efficiency of your boiler and the amount of insulation in the property. I used to have a 3-bed detached house and we got through 1000L a year. We were never cold, but used far less oil than any of my friends.

Thanks for all your responses. I think we’ll see how we get on when we move in- 2 weeks time fingers crossed - the next few months will be the coldest ones so will be able to gauge better then.
