I was just reading another thread about someone not being a size 6 anymore. Just got me thinking. I'm in pretty good shape and I think look quite 'slim' but would never in a million years be a size 6! I was very slim / underweight in my early 20's but even then wouldn't have been a true 8.

Are some people just more naturally bulky? Is it height, shop sizing? I guess a combination. I think I would be much happier if I could be a size 8 though lol.

5.3 here and I was a 6 in my 20s, but I was SKINNY. Ribs showing skinny. I weighed 52kgs.
Now 40 and a size 8 or 10 after overindulgence. That’s my natural size, I don’t watch what I eat, but I do exercise. With effort (and breastfeeding baby) I got down to 57kgs, but normal 58-59 and have been about that for the last 10 years. I have a very small waist but have really noticed where I carry weight has changed with age. I always had a proportionately big bum, but now it’s hips and thighs too.

So while I wear size 8 dresses, my but and thighs need a 10.

You also have to consider whether you have a long or short torso as this affects how you carry your weight. If you google you can see how to dress for your torso size.

I have a long torso so I have a slim waist as fat around my midsection is distributed evenly. I couldn't fit in size 6 jeans because I have wider hips and bigger ass but I can fit in stretchy size 6 skirts and some size 6 dresses because I have small boobies. I have always been a size 8 though since my teen years.
I'm 5ft7 and 55kg

With 37-38" hips & BMI ~21 I was a size 8-10 in many brands.
I don't see why I wouldn't get down to a size 6 trousers in many, maybe most brands if my BMI went down to 18.6. Even though I'm 5'8".

Doesn't seem far-fetched to me.

newrubylane · 19/12/2020 12:57

@imamearcat that was probably the most ridiculous thing I've ever read

ForestNymph · 19/12/2020 13:07

Depends. I'm 5"6 and a size 10, but I have been and could be a 6-8. I have very small bones, narrow wrists and a narrow waist and ribcage. Its mainly hips and boobs since having kids that makes me a 10, but I can guarantee I wouldn't look emaciated at a 6-8 despite not being short. It depends entirely on frame.

WankPuffins · 19/12/2020 13:08

When I was a healthy weight I was a size 8. I'm 5'5" and I was at top end of BMi, I'm a very heavy person even though I was small, no one believed I was still just over 10st at a size 8 with a 24 inch waist!

I'm much larger now, an 18 having come down from a 24 at my largest. People don't believe I was ever an 8 as they say I have a "large frame". Um, no. I just have a small frame covered in a massive amount of fat.

megletthesecond · 19/12/2020 13:13

Sizes are so variable that unless you're only buying from one shop they're irrelevant.
I can be a 6-8 in next, I am not a 6-8 in old money, it's just vanity sizing.
My shoulders and thighs are athletic which makes clothes shopping difficult.
I go off BMI instead. And making sure I don't grow out of my clothes.

InterfectoremVulpes · 19/12/2020 13:15

I'm 5'5" and weigh between 10s9 and 10s12 and wear 10/12 tops and 12/14 bottoms.

I've lost a lot of weight and have a belly pooch of excess skin hanging down which probably makes me heavier than I should be IYSWIM
