Why did you start using mumsnet?

For me it was pregnancy advice and support. It was one of many forums I visited but I soon found it was the most active and more on my wavelength.

Then I stuck around for breastfeeding advice. Then the relationship board was a huge support to me during an awful separation.

Lately it's more general interest, getting a dose of company during this shitty lonely time.

Interested to know if my mumsnet journey is typical!

It was around this time six years ago I think. I was bored and lonely and wanted to engage with people. I’m glad I found it but it’s nowhere near as funny and friendly as it was..

Weekends · 17/12/2020 20:27

I used to read to the Adoption UK forum regularly, then it went very quiet when changes were made. Mumsnet was mentioned in the site so over I came!

ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf · 17/12/2020 20:28

A client who was a parent mentioned having done a course of netmums. Looked it up, but soon found and preferred it here. Been here around 8 yrs now

Just over 14 years ago I couldn’t quite remember the name of a parenting website someone had recommended to me at the baby clinic. I googled mumsnet when actually I’d been recommended netmums, however I signed up not long after moldies kicked off so was hooked forever more.

SimonJT · 17/12/2020 20:34

I needed some ideas with a reluctant toilet trainer

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 17/12/2020 20:39

It was 2006/7 and I must’ve been googling for something, way before having dc. I had a look around and stayed because it was hilarious, I’ve never laughed so much on any other website.

And the way women on here talked about their dc persuaded me to have my own (my dm had presented it as an ordeal start to finish, so I wasn’t going to have any). The live and affection made me want to join in Smile

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 17/12/2020 20:40

I dent actually post anything for a few years I was so intimidated by the wit and intelligence. It’s changed a bit since then Grin

Autumnchill · 17/12/2020 20:42

My SIL use to tell me about these threads on Mumsnet and after my divorce whilst single I got enthralled in the different non-parenting conversations and parking wars etc. First one I got involved in was a neighbour stealing a cat and then someone who thought someone was coming through the loft whilst they were out/asleep

Sturmundcalm · 17/12/2020 20:43

joined Wedding Guide UK when I got engaged and was wedding planning, transitioned to their baby boards and then to Baby Greenhouse, and then to here as BGH was disappearing... don't post much and the boards I've used over the years have varied

nosswith · 17/12/2020 20:43

To play Mornington Crescent.

DailyPotion · 17/12/2020 20:43

I googled for help on toilet training and this is where I ended up. It took another 3 years for DS2 to be reliably clean...

BrassicaBabe · 17/12/2020 20:45

Joined in c2010 when we started TTC. MN was the first place I came to tell my friends when I found out we were having twins!

ThatDamnKrampus · 17/12/2020 20:46

I can't remember how I found it, I think a link on fb. I got really hooked after reading I cupped my bosses balls (or something along those lines) one night and I laughed so much my waters burst (I swear it was the laughing!). I've been here for the last 6 years, waste far too much time on here but aside from the humour I have had some amazing support about some really tough stuff and I know if I want honesty and support (or a kick up the arse when needed ) I will find it here.

GinandGingerBeer · 17/12/2020 21:23

I joined in 2012 I think ..... I was on a really glitchy 5:2 forum when 5:2 was in its infancy. A poster joined who had been banned from MN and she was pretty miffed about it (ban was lifted, she was still here as regular poster who is lovely and gave great advice on various topics but I haven't seen her for a while, so if you know who you are, it's all your fault GrinGrinGrin)

So I came for 5:2 found AIBU & Chat and then never left.

Hung about on S&B too, loved it. Spent too much!

I was part of a long running really lovely welcoming thread on S&B and I've made some fantastic friends, who are kind and lovely and have helped keep me going through a shite year.
(For anyone who is a regular on S&B No, we weren't Hush plants, yes we genuinely bought a lot of Hush stuff.....and other stuff Grin but we kind of got fed up of being accused of being plants/trolls so took it off the boards)

I have recently started using MN again, every so often it gets on my nerves and i have a break for a few months.

People are fascinating aren't they? Some of the stuff I read on here and the responses....... real or not, it's entertaining, educating in parts and makes me thankful for what I have.

BexR · 17/12/2020 21:30

Oh god @Autumnchill I remember the loft one. Some threads have terrified me which is awkward cos it's usually late night reading and I go to bed petrified.

I still giggle about some threads. What's that one where she introduced herself as someone else??! Julia Hernandez or something. Guffaw!!

Found mn while looking for advice on my (what turned out to be) PND. Spent a long time researching weaning. Got lots of advice during h's affair and our eventual divorce. Stayed because of the very funny threads.
That was nearly 16 years ago, I'm still here out of habit really. Funny only happens once in a blue moon and the same 5 thread topics get recycled weekly.

GinandGingerBeer · 17/12/2020 21:36

Sorry I sound all smug in that post, I come across really badly Blush
My life is actually shite at the mo, honest... Xmas Sad but sometimes things need putting into perspective Smile

DramaAlpaca · 17/12/2020 21:37

I didn't know about MN when my children were small, unfortunately, found it when they were teenagers. I came across it by accident about 9 years ago, when I was searching online for a Boden discount code of all things. The site piqued my interest, I found the Talk boards, lurked for while then signed up. I stay because I laugh so much and learn so much, and have had lots of useful support and advice over the years.

MirandaWest · 17/12/2020 21:38

I can’t remember how I got here, but was when DS (now 17) was a few months old and I was trying to find out whether any other accountants had gone back to work part time.

I also was on ivillage back in the day Grin

YewandOak · 17/12/2020 21:41

No idea..
I think it was because many things I googled, led back to here. So I made an account and stayed. I've had a few name changes because I get bored of them.

hilariousnamehere · 17/12/2020 21:45

Love these! I wonder if mine is typical of a childfree single?! A couple of mum friends had mentioned it, and then over a couple of months pretty much every obscure thing I was looking for had a search result with a good answer on Mumsnet... So I joined 😂 and turns out I miss the forums of yesteryear which have all now become Facebook groups so I hang out here sometimes instead Grin

BexR · 17/12/2020 21:56

I preface most Google searches with "mumsnet" - rashes, washer dryers, work questions - the results are always better through mumsnet.

PollyDarton1 · 17/12/2020 22:01

I used to go on a forum called Handbag and it eventually got shite, and people migrated over here. Must have been around 2006? I wasn't a parent but stayed for the chat, sometimes dropping in and out, and then became a stepmum in 2014 and a mum in 2016.

WitsEnding · 17/12/2020 22:04

I’d like to say parenting teen drop-out issues and separation advice. Although I was here for those, I suspect it may have been a mention of penis beaker that brought me in. 😊

I’m very glad of the company, especially now.

grassisjeweled · 17/12/2020 22:07

When pregnant with DS.

Googled something and came accross a hilarious post from some woman pregnant, stuck on an island somewhere.

Also a very funny post which resonated : her mother had told her 'don't let anyone kick you when you go swimming' GrinConfused

It was so random and funny
