Should I get DS (3) a Grimms rainbow?

Have I left it too late - is he too old to get the benefit now? Are they really all that brilliant? Will he play with it all day every day until he's 13 as people keep promising me? Or are they just a vanity project? I figure at the very least he can use it as ramps for his hot wheels

I’ve got one. Think it’s been played with once. But honestly? I didn’t buy it for the kids.

Haha! Hot Wheels ramp is a great idea for it. But, no, don’t buy it unless you want to display it to prove how middle class you are

I have the aldi version, my three year old sometimes gets it out. But it has its place as room decoration too.

I am not middle class and I have nowhere to display it really. Maybe I should just stay in my lane

Ahh the pretty grimms rainbow.... That I've used more than my toddler dcs! they haven't touched it once.

After that DH asked me to "stop buying expensive wooden shite that they don't want to play with".

It was a fair point with the rainbow but the multiple grapat wooden bits are played with everyday. I would get some of those bits if you're looking for nice wooden pieces. One minute they are cooking with them and making salads/pizza, the next they are boulders for their construction site. Really nice stuff.

I got a cheap version and it's been played with a handful of times, now it's away because it winds me up the fact I expected so much more from it. We have a huge range of wooden toys, but this one is the least favourite. I assume the proper Grimms one wouldn't be much different

We bought one for DD2 Christmas when she was 3

Dp was not happy about this '£50 bit of wood' as a play value alone they don't use it much however a few weeks later for her 4th birthday I bought the semicircles and she played with it loads building various storied houses for small figures and rather enjoyed lying in it like a mermaid.

However consider it was about £90 for the pair I could have bought her a nice wooden dolls house that would have done the same job.

On the other hand it looks lovely as a decoration in her room

Should have added they are the Grapat Mandala pieces. Indestructible and great for open ended play.

We also have the grimms friends? Think they are called. Little peg people things that live in the rainbow/semicircle house.

We've had it all over the years but DD much prefers LOL and barbies and associated plastic tat sobs

It was beautiful. Ds was 4.

He looked at like I was the biggest twat on Earth and never touched it. It gathered dust in the playroom for YEARS.

I also got a much cheaper one on amazon, think paid about £15;for one that's about a4 size, dc not interested in it at all really, I honestly wonder if half the 'structures' that are posted on social media are the work of the actual child!

I bought one for Christmas when DS was 1 and DD3. For two years it gathered dust, occasionally brought out to turn DD into a mermaid. But since he turned 3 DS pretty much plays with it every day. Tunnels for wooden train tracks and vehicles, enclosures for toy dinosaurs, caves and dens for toy animals and just simply building towers with it. So I think it depends on the kid- DD has never been into imaginative play, but DS is really good at it and I think we'll get a lot of use out of it for the next few years.

I went through a phase of being Grimms stuff for DS when he was about 3. He’s 6 now and in the intervening 3 years has barely touched them. He does get them out occasionally, maybe one every couple of months or so, and they look lovely, but basically they were a massive waste of money. I keep toying with the idea of selling them as they’re in mint condition but if I do, I’ll do it next October or November to appeal to the Xmas market - hopefully some eco-wannabe mummy (like me 3 years ago!) will be glad to get a bargain!

I think they're really shit TBH. They were very trendy when DD was born (she's 3 too) and someone bought us one. Dull, and quite cheap looking when you find out the price.

It’s a bit of a vanity project but I think mine uses hers more as she gets older and also when I got the semi circles. She did an amazing hospital with it a few weeks ago with duplo people and beds. It’s much more fun combined with other things.

I was really skeptical, especially with the price, but the rainbow was one of the most played with thing at the nursery I used to work at. It was used for everything from car ramps, dinosaur caves, houses and loads more. I wish I knew about them when DC were little.

I was really into this stuff when my oldest, now 8, was a toddler, but tbh he always preferred "plasic crap". My youngest, now 6, was a bit more into it but by then I'd made my peace with the plastic stuff. Maybe get a 2nd hand one?

My 5 and 8 year old we’re playing with theirs today. It’s about 8 years old too and used for loads of stuff.

Sometimes my DC uses it as a car tunnel but tbh I got it because I fell for the big hype about then and unless you're willing to invest in the full Grimms shebang I wouldn't bother

We love it and he's 2 in January, I removed the biggest 3 circles as they are just a bit too big for now. He's learning the colours as well, we got the wood ring stacker from Grimms as well - loves it! These were actually presents from my parents and I grew up with only wood toys mostly. At the moment we use it for the trains and cars to go thorough, he loves pushing them thorough. He's getting a 40pcs road for Christmas which you can build inside and outside but I do think it depends on the whole set up of your nursery / play area. Most of our toys are made of wood, if plastic it's sturdy aka Lego Duplo (he loves his train and is getting a digger set for Christmas). It needs to work with what you have and what sort of play you encourage I suppose.

I want the toys I get him to last and for him to not outgrow them too quick.

Ours gets played with loads by my 2 and 6 year old. At least a few times aweek. Occasionally the 8 year old joins in. But the semi circles don't as much as I thought they would.

If you want one, get one, I say. Some toys are more for the parent than the child.

Mind you, my DS has got a lot of use out of my beautiful magnatiles.
