Secret Sister

Is anyone doing this? I got involved via Facebook. My friend was organising it & gave me the address of her boyfriend’s Mum. I had to send a present worth up to £5 anonymously. I sent 2 pairs of Christmas earrings made by another friend. Today I received a parcel of lovely treats which really brightened my day.

Wait, you have given your name and address to a complete stranger?

JanetPudding · 09/12/2020 19:47

@EternalOptimist7

As far as I know, only one person has my address. And the parcel didn’t have my surname on it. JaniceBattersby you could have posted more kindly

Her message may seem tough, but if you Google "secret sister" the first result says it's a scam, and before you get there you can watch a video on the scam, and the Wikipedia entry describes it as a pyramid scheme and chain letter. It's fair to say that someone with the internet at the tip of their fingers could probably work out what it truly is without too much effort.

@pistolknight

These have been around forever, it was postcards in the 80s. I seem to remember books and pants too.
Yes - I think I received my 'knickers' plea in about 1983.

The person who sent it to me was a friend/colleague. I found it quite awkward to have to say to her that no, I didn't want to be any part of a chain letter gubbins.

I remember saying that someone with M&S shares must have started it.

MiddleClassProblem · 09/12/2020 19:57

There was a children’s book one going around a few years ago

Flibbitygibbit · 09/12/2020 21:45

Me 87 🤣

Flibbitygibbit · 09/12/2020 21:46

@FlibbertyGiblets

No of course you're not a bad person. Naive, too trusting perhaps. You had to give your address to effectively a bunch of strangers, along with your name.
Are we nearly twins in internet land do you think 🤣
EggNogPegg · 09/12/2020 21:52

Well, this is a disappointing thread. I too was hoping for some EastEnders level Christmas drama with a secret sister.

FlibbertyGiblets · 09/12/2020 22:55

Nearly twins cept I have GIBLETS hahaha.

MiddleClassProblem · 09/12/2020 22:57

I can only hope that tomorrow OP receives a mysterious gift actually from her secret sister.

AdobeWanKenobi · 09/12/2020 22:58

An ex colleague posted about this last month. I linked her to the news article. She was really grateful and dropped out much to the annoyance of another ex colleague who said it couldn't possibly be a scam because she wasn't sending money....
I wished her well.

Me 569.

I think that you are going to have to take a DNA test now OP just to satisfy our curiosity about any secret siblings, at this stage I would settle for a half brother or maybe even a long lost cousin. No knickers though please.
