How much for the class collection for teachers gift?

At what point did ten pounds become the standard donation for a class gift? I'm sure it was a couple of quid ( a fiver for the generous)a few years ago?

What do you cough up for your five year olds?

I normally do the class collection and ask for £10, this is for the teacher and 2 TA.

I wouldn't give anything, never done teachers gifts and never will, I've got 3 dc. Luckily Ive also never been asked to 'chip in' like this.

£10 each on average, but it's carefully worded - people know it's not obligatory to give at all, and only put in what you can afford. You can be anonymous on paypal, and the card and gift go from the whole class so no one is left out.

Usually ends with about £300+ across a teacher and TA, and we do collections at Christmas and Summer breaks. That's at a state primary in a well-off area. The class social rep usually converts it into champagne, nice truffles, and then vouchers for whatever their interest area is, or John Lewis if all else fails.

My teacher DM used to come home with about 30 chocolate oranges every Christmas. She was touched by people's gifts, but that's still a heck of a lot of chocolate oranges.

DD is in Y6 and it was £10 to cover the TA and the teacher. It does mean we can get them something decent (usually vouchers) but if someone doesn't want to contribute it's not compulsory. Normally one of the mums in the year will suggest that she will organise it and asks people to contribute if they want to.

I have no problem with this as DDs TA is the best TA ever to walk the earth and has helped DD so much. Her teacher is also very good.

Equally if people want to do their own thing or not do anything it is up to them.

Preschool, with 20 kids and 3 teachers, £10 each has been suggested.

It seems on average 10 seems like a reasonable amount then :) I collected in the money (paypal no handling dirty cash in the playground these days!) and there was a polite just give what you can afford but if we give x we can... 95% of the class gave 10 or more 20 was the top donation.

I was surprised maybe my neighbours are richer and more generous than me Grin
