They emptied my bin!!

So on Friday we missed the bin collection. Totally our fault, forgot to put it out.

Due to it being very full, we were a bit worried about having to get through another 2 weeks, i decided to email the council to ask for a one off pick up. Said it was our fault, not theirs. We live near the depot so figured they might be able to tag it onto another route, but thought if you dont ask, you dont get!

Never heard anything back so just thought they had decided to ignore my cheeky request, but 10 mins ago a little bin lorry turned up, they went and got our bin from round the side of the house, and emptied it!

Only realised when we heard the noise, so ran out and was able to say thank you, but so happily surprised that this actually happened!

Is this a thing all councils do or is mine particularly nice?

No crush, sadly Sad
But I hadn’t put mine out for a few weeks when I first moved into a new house (partly because I was ill and I just didn’t know the days!). They knocked on to ask, and when I said I had a bit extra that had built up, Half a dozen of them trooped around to my outhouse and shifted the lot.
Made my day Grin

Ours are very good also. They won't let you take the mickey, but will help out where they can.

Witchend · 02/12/2020 15:55

Ours do that. I've forgotten two or three times or put out the wrong bin, and they've always come back the next day. They're a lovely cheerful bunch who joined in with a snowball fight with ds one year.

myneighboursarerude · 02/12/2020 15:57

Ours are bloody awful.

They were once wheeling bins from down the pavement, a recycling bin fell over the curb of the pavement, emptied plastic into the gutter and they just left it, picked the bin up, emptied what was left and drove off.

They also seem to love blocking my drive with the bin as well Angry

mildlymiffed · 02/12/2020 15:58

Please say thank you! They'll really appreciate it (local authority worker here!!!). Good on them! Public "service" at its finest Smile

CoffeeRunner · 02/12/2020 15:58

I bet it’s because you were polite & admitted the mistake rather than being an ass about it.

Makes people more inclined to help you if they possibly can Xmas Smile.

Has working from home introduced this new interest in bins …. I ask because my interest has increased 100%.

GloGirl · 02/12/2020 16:12

I asked our council so many times they wrote to me and said they wouldn't do it any more!

That's on ADHD and sleep deprivation

It's a slice of life not normally noticed unless/until you are mostly at home long term.

We once forgot to put our main bin out on the last collection before Christmas. It was at the front of the house but not wheeled onto the path for collection. They saw we had forgotten, wheeled it up and emptied it. It was a small thing but they didn't have to do it and it saved us from a big inconvenience.

Ours ( London borough ) is very efficient and are great about doing missed pickups, plus the recycling depot is very helpful and well run. I’ve emailed positive comments to the management on a couple of occasions. I count myself lucky.

BlueBrian · 02/12/2020 16:37

When I first moved into this house, the previous occupants had filled up both recycling bins with normal rubbish, so I rang up the council, and they came round especially to empty them.

ClaudiaWankleman · 02/12/2020 16:47

Bin people. Women work on the bins too!

@BlackForestCake Yes they do!

Our non-recyclables lorry is driven by a woman while two men chuck the stuff in the back. It's not an easy road to drive down at the best of times, and she reverses down it with high precision.

ScottishStottie · 02/12/2020 16:54

Will defo be emailing them to say thank you, and leaving something out for the bin men at christmas! (Does the recycling and normal have the same squad or do they alternate...?)

As a pp said upthread, it's little things like this that really cheer you up, lockdown et al has been getting to me recently and this really picked me up. Little gestures go a long way :)

That's very nice. Ours was missed once (not my fault bin was out) and we had to wait until following week, bin was already full. Told them what I should do with rubbish they said put them at the side of the house. Was summer so told them i would be putting them on the street as it was there problem and didn't want smelly nappies/cat litter in my garden stinking the place up.
