Here's some lyrics and a theme:

And with the new day's morning
She felt it drift away
Not only for a cruise, not only for a day
80s

Now he's sitting in his hole
He might as well have buttons and bows
80s

Smiling faces as you wait to land,
But once you get there no-one gives a damn
80s

My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
I’ve put lyrics up to this song before and noone got it, so not sure why I’m doing it again, except it fits with my theme 90s

I really wasn't sure what was going on
80s

Stolen from Africa, brought to America
Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival
70s, I think

Where can you find pleasure, search the world for treasure
Learn science technology?
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true
70s

Climb up here Joe, we'll soon by flying
Back to the ranks so blue
1902 according to google, so not strictly 80s! Hit at the end of the 60s.

I don't really wanna lose you
But I don't want your folks to
Turn me over to the hands of the law
80s

FlouncingB

Reckless and so hungered
On the razors edge you trail

This is Wild Boys, Duran Duran. I don't know if Wild Boys has a literary connection, but the name of their group comes from Barberella, which is some B movie staring Bridgette Bardo (which is also where Electric Barberella comes from)

ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf · 06/12/2020 01:47

FlouncingB
Kate Bush, Sensual World - connection established by *@ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf - 50 bonus points for knowing it was based on a soliloquy from James Joyce’s Ulysses
it sooooo irks me that the fact I'm a KB fan is seen as something like a coincidence on these threads in favour of you.

It's been such a long week
So much crying
I no longer see a future

I can't believe I missed this!!!!!! This is In Search of Peter Pan!!!! (KB. So scrap my previous snippy post, I'm clearly NOT a proper fan!)

ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf · 06/12/2020 01:51

I'm not the man they think I am at home
Rocket man identified but how does this relate to the theme? Big bonus points up for grabs

Bill Bryson????

ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf · 06/12/2020 01:54

^So I lit a fire
Isn't it good^

Oh! This is Norwegian Wood! I'm not sure which work of literature it's referencing though. The Killing???? That's Swedish, but up there!

Needtoknow: Just to complete your night ShelfElf, check out the last post on the 'Do you like... part 2' thread....

Hadn't seen the thread, but have been and checked it out. Didn't realize at first what you were alluding to.

Got it!

Just so's you know, I don't care about closing threads generally, just doing it now to piss you off on here! (and to give you some competition come awards night!)

NeedToKnow101 · 06/12/2020 07:02

@ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf

One of yours is Buffalo Soldier Bob Marley

And another is Trapped by Colonel Abrams

Law and order theme? Morning bye!

NeedToKnow101 · 06/12/2020 07:05

I mean btw not bye Blush. Think the theme may be about being displaced actually.

There's a novel called Norwegian Wood by Mukakami (?). Why am I up so early on my day off..

Is your theme war?

FlouncingBabooshka · 06/12/2020 09:19

@ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf , the buttons and bows one is Kate Bush, Army Dreamers and the one that mentions Africa is Buffalo Soldier by Bob Marley.

Honeyroar · 06/12/2020 09:20

It’s something military - the first one is Captain of her heart. Not sure who by, I ought to know, we’ve done it before!

Bluesheep8 · 06/12/2020 09:23

Is the theme army ranks?
Or just the Army in general?

Honeyroar · 06/12/2020 09:26

Is the Smiling faces one Status Quo You’re in the army now?

ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf · 06/12/2020 09:46

All correct in your guesses. A couple still outstanding though.
The single lined 80s lyric, the one after the very long one is repeated twice, if that's helpful.

The theme is military, so it's honey who names it correctly. No points, but you can have the Victoria Cross.

Honeyroar · 06/12/2020 09:55

The one liner is 19 Paul Hardcastle. I hadn’t even noticed it!

Honeyroar · 06/12/2020 09:56

Victoria cross? I want points!😣

Nnnnnnnnn 19
FlouncingBabooshka · 06/12/2020 10:03

Oh blast - I missed that NeedtoKnow had already got the Bob Marley.

Well done @ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf - I didn’t post all those KB songs to advantage you, (you don’t need the help) they just fitted the theme too perfectly to leave out.

I think I was a little mean with my points for the James Joyce connection. It’s more obscure than Joe Orton and I gave 100 points for that so I’ll increase your bonus to 150.

Nothing for Bill Bryson though - unless you have identified a link I didn’t know about?

@NeedToKnow101, well done - 150 bonus points for spotting Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami.

I’ll post clues to the outstanding ones later today.

NeedToKnow101 · 06/12/2020 10:05

Wild Boys is in a book by William Burroughs, Or the title of the book.. unless it's Lord of the Flies but I think that's the lost boys..

(I initially wrote Lord if the Flues which would be a great name for a gas engineer business).

ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf · 06/12/2020 10:05

Victoria cross? I want points!😣
Chuckling into sunday!

You can have a point as well, honey cos I'm in a good mood
