Looking for my Dad who hasn't stayed up to date with technology and smart phones. He still has an ancient Nokia with no touch screen. He doesn't have the Internet or wifi.

He has been shielding since March and now the cold dark days are coming in I'm trying to convince him to get a tablet so friends and family can video call him (he's 45 mins away from me). Not only that I am hoping he could learn to order his own food shopping if he wants (he lives alone but local friends drop supplies into him) and clothes from M&S etc

Anyone got any tips for us please? I'm so used to using an android smartphone on wifi for everything.

Ipad is probably the easiest interface to learn. Mil learned how to make calls and facetime within minutes and she can’t speak or read English. You could pick an old one up refurbished - we’re still using one from 4 years ago.

Thanks all. Looks like Apple might be the way to go.

@GrumpyHoonMain is the 4yo refurbished iPad 4G data compatible? Or WiFi only? My Dad doesn't have WiFi so need to get one that we can get a contract and put a 4G SIM card in to use data only.

Yes - you can get ones with 4g and wifi. The 4g ones are probably a bit pricier.

There is a great company called Breezie through Age UK, who put an interface over the top of a Sumsung tablet so it is easier for older people. I got one some years ago for my mum who was partially blind and partially deaf. It was great and she got on with it really well. Lots of support with it too. She lost it on a 24 hour transatlantic flight two years later and she now gets by with an ordinary Samsung tablet instead, but nowhere as user friendly and she often struggles. But she is very determined at 87 not to be out of the loop.
