1 carat solitaire ring = £1000?

My mum does sometimes have an unrealistic view of how much things cost so I thought I'd put this out there.

She says that a good rule of thumb when looking for a diamond solitaire ring is that 1 carat = £1000. I can't find any solitaires for this much, even looking on antique/vintage sites.

Is this realistic, and if not, what is a good rule of thumb for a 1 carat solitaire ring?

Not a white diamond though -which makes it rarer. For insurance it's at £20K but I think for £15K I would be able to get a replacement.

@LaurieFairyCake

Not unrealistic

On Bonhams, Pawnshops, EBay

I’m not seeing anything on eBay, just a superficial search though.

For a high quality 1 carat brand new I’d say you’re more like £5k - £10k

I got a 1ct high spec valued recently and it was £11k. It cost $9k + tax about 10 years ago.

DonLewis · 07/11/2020 20:07

My 1 ct solitaire engagement ring was valued a couple of years ago. 10k.

WitsEnding · 07/11/2020 20:17

My very poor quality 1ct solitaire was £1k on the Tesco website when XH bought it in 2007, although I suspect he went to Argos and paid more. It has visible flaws I can see from 2 feet away.

I would never have chosen a diamond.

JoJoSM2 · 07/11/2020 20:24

1ct sapphire - possibly.
1ct diamond - definitely nothing half decent.

Not sure what the point of the thread is other than your mum not having much understanding of the price of things?

As a side note, for some families it’s cheaper to have a SAHP than paying childcare for 2.

No, my 1carat was £10,000 5years agoConfused

Galwaygirl · 07/11/2020 22:11

1.5 carat cost 10k in 2010, depends on cut, clarity etc.

CoffeeDay · 07/11/2020 22:46

I tried on a high quality 1carat ring when picking engagement rings and it cost 16K. Discreetly put it back after seeing the tag as I didn't want to give DH a heart attack Grin

I recently got a mid-range 1 carat ring for 7K, which felt reasonable for the size. The diamond had a few imperfections which I can't notice anyway!

Nearlysantatime · 07/11/2020 22:52

Absolutely not.

Quaversplease · 08/11/2020 00:45

I have a 1.2 carat diamind, colour D, VS1 and it was just valued for insurance purposes at £12k.

Ohtannenbaumohtannenbaum · 08/11/2020 00:51

My 0.5ct solitaire (platinum band) engagement ring was £2.5k 3 years ago

Afwan · 08/11/2020 04:10

My 2ct VS1 solitaire was on 'sale' for £10,000.

Fun fact: all the diamonds ever mined/available would fill a London double decker bus Smile

wallyb · 08/11/2020 05:15

My ring is 1ct but D colour & good cut is 12 yrs old & insured for 11k so I think 1k is unrealistic.
