Narrative songs

They played 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia' by the Charlie Daniels band on the radio the other day, which obviously got me furiously playing my air fiddle, and also got me thinking about other narrative songs, and how songs that tell a story don't seem to be such a thing anymore. They were quite popular back in the day but I can't think of many modern ones. So what are your favourites/least favourites? That's chart songs, not songs from musicals.

Another one I thought of, that became an ear worm yesterday, is the Pina Colada song - which provides a lesson for us all 😄

There's an American singer/songwriter, Brandy Clark, who writes wonderful story song. In fact her first album is called '10 stories' - each a perfectly told tale of normal daily life. I love her.

Bit early for Christmas stuff I know, but this is a Yuletide constitutional in our house.

Somethingunderthebedislurking · 14/10/2020 10:41

You know, I always thought the word ‘constitutional’ had a different meaning 🤔

Don't think it's been mentioned, but "7 Years" by Lucas Graham? That's pretty modern.

Not quite so modern, but "The Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks.
