What can your 9 year old cook?

I'm trying to encourage my 9 year old to cook meals rather than cake. He does like cooking and can use the oven and hob independently (although he can't use the grill as its too high up), and he can chop veg safely. Its helping his confidence to cook by himself which he really needs at the moment.

What do your 9 year olds or a little older cook for the family? I'm particularly looking for simple meat based meals as I'm vegetarian so aware my meat based cooking is pretty limited.

It does depend on the child doesn’t it. DD has loved cooking since she was little. She used to love Katie I can cook on cbbc and we used to cook things from her book, then as she got older she liked the show Gordon Ramsey’s daughter did. She enjoys it. My eldest has no interest at all although during lockdown we have had hello fresh discounted boxes so he has been making one of those each week. The 9 year old needs help cooking but is only really interested if it is something he like really likes like burgers or tacos.

DD is 12 now and is always in the kitchen making cakes or cookies or lunch for everyone or dinner.

Agree with this. DD has always loved cooking programmes. She watches baking programmes liked Nailed it all the time.

DS8 can use the toaster...but that’s about it.
DS10 can use the toaster, make a good selection of cold foods and use the microwave for noodles and beans etc.
DS12 has been learning to cook recently-and his repertoire consists of chicken stir fry, toad in the hole, spag bol, chilli and vegetarian pasta dishes.
