Me and my friend thinks this means different things. How would you read this?

Just so the OP is clear the date you applied had no effect on whether you got the place, you applied before the deadline therefore the criteria where applied to you and you got a place. Loads of parents apply every year before the deadline and don't get the school they want, first time parents need to be clear on that

Your friend is wrong. There is no advantage to applying well before the deadline compared to applying on the day before the deadline.
