Gluten free people who mistakenly get glutened

I am trying a gluten free diet to help with a mild autoimmune condition. It's been about 4 months now and I feel good. I did give up dairy for about 3 months but reinstated this gradually last month and felt ok - no stomach issues etc and much happier as I could have a decent cup of tea.

Over the couple of days I have bloated up like a massive cow. I am pooing more but it's not loose or anything, just more frequently. I am farting like a friggin cart horse and my tummy is churning like crazy. My dh just told me off for walking round waitrose stroking my tummy like I'm 7 months pregnant it's so bloated.

Have I been glutened? It doesn't feel like food poisoning or a tummy bug or anything but it's not nice.

Mine wouod have passed by now its something your eating now thats causing the issue

SweetPetrichor · 25/09/2020 15:26

I wouldn't say so. If I get glutened, it's over in a few (horrendous) hours. It's more likely something else you're eating that's causing the problem.

Thanks both. I will look for a different culprit. Whatever it is it's pretty unpleasant and not just for me!

When I get glutened, it sometimes does really affect me till the next day. Try keeping a food diary, see if there is something you have eaten each time this happens

When I get glutened I get intense pain about 20 minutes later but then I’m often really badly affected for 6 weeks Shock. The longer symptoms would be similar to yours...looking pregnant (from 20 minutes after being glutened for 6 weeks or so), dodgy bowels, foul wind, mouth sores or ulcers. The pain is so bad initially that I have to curl up in a ball and rock from side to side - a couple of times I’ve have to do this on the way back from a meal out if they haven’t been careful re cross contamination. Then the pain will gradually become duller...usually a bruised feeling on my lower right side for the 6 weeks.

Bloody awful!

Ps try some Colpermin or Peppermint oil and drink Ginger Ale or Ginger Tea for the bloating. Probiotics are a good idea too.

Lots of coeliacs say symptoms of glutening can last for days or weeks. Join Coeliacs in the UK facebook group lots of chat there and you dont need to be diagnosed coeliac.to join in.

L-Glutamine works brilliantly, but takes a bit of time (couple of days).

Thinking about it the last time I had symptoms like yours I was accidentally drinking squash that contained gluten DAILY because I felt ill i was upping my fluid intake because my fluids contained gluten (it was barley water which does effect me) I was making myself feel ill it took a few days for me to work out
