My laptop's finger/mouse pad (?) is scratched. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

As you can see in the picture (hopefully) the pad where I put my finger to move the cursor is damaged. Some of the surface layer is scratched off. I'm not sure what happened to it, but it's a bit annoying.
Has anyone had a similar problem and fixed/improved it without replacing the whole keypad?
Thanks

Needs resurfacing.

@MLMsuperfan how do you do that?

If you're using the laptop on a desk, you could just buy a cheap wireless mouse, easier to operate too.

I use the Amazon Basics usb one, but you can get them with different connectors depending on what ports you have free.

I use a wireless mouse too. Much simpler.

Yes I have a wireless mouse ... but like to have it on my lap while I watch TV.
