What to do with cash?

Genuine question. I have £50 in cash and no idea what to do with it

I haven’t used cash in years so only have a card holder - I kept the notes in my card holder but had to fold them to fit in; when I tried to pay them into my bank account the bank pay in machine would not accept them due to the fold. The bank also won’t accept cash over the counter due to COVID.

There’s also nowhere to spend it as to my knowledge, it’s cashless payments only virtually everywhere.

Yeah, I did walk out of the branch thinking “wtf”. Apparently it’a part of their COVID guidance

I have been using cash fine in shops, and to pay the window cleaner.

Tesco takes cash..

Not really sure why this is such as issue

BigRedBoat · 05/09/2020 21:57

I have paid cash in Sainsbury's, Co-op, the local funfair, McDonald's, a local restaurant, b&m and next recently. I'm sure you could find somewhere to spend it, if not you're welcome to send it to me and I'll get rid of it for you Grin

I used cash in the supermarket this morning
If worried about passing it to cashier you can use self scan

lillylemons · 05/09/2020 22:10

I've been able to use cash in lots of places Tesco, Sainsburys, Iceland, uniform shop, corner shop and the chippy.
No ones told me i can't use cash.

MsEllany · 05/09/2020 22:21

Most places prefer card but will accept cash.

I was given £100 the other day, have spent most of it in Boots, B&M, Costco and our local small Asda.

Fair enough, I was definitely under the impression that they wouldn’t accept cash at all. The bank saga just solidified my assumption!! I always use Apple Pay so I’m not familiar with cash payments post-lockdown

I’ve managed to offload £10 so farGrin on a taxi!

I’ve managed to spend cash again recently- supermarkets both self checkout and regular check out, little co op, nandos, dinner elsewhere, school uniform shop, Russel and Bromley, erm, trying to think where else I’ve spent cash! Acquired lots of it over the last 6 months and have barely been anywhere to spend it until recently.
There are signs up asking to pay with a contactless method if possible but many will accept cash if you ask.

savetti · 05/09/2020 23:11

Today I paid cash for the dog groomer, the car wash
The car park
Takeaway
Sainsburys and corner shop
And garage

im5050 · 05/09/2020 23:32

Take it to the post office and pay it into your account over the counter

im5050 · 05/09/2020 23:34

You could iron the notes
Just put a piece of paper over it and iron all the folds out of the note 😂

fantasmasgoria1 · 05/09/2020 23:37

All supermarkets, majority of high Street stores etc are taking cash.

ChickenwingChickenwing · 05/09/2020 23:38

I use cash every day.

Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury's, M&S...Costa, JD Sports, Smiggle, Primark, Superdrug, Boots, Yours - all shops I have used cash to pay in the last 7 days. Also local paper shop and takeaways.

chickywoo · 05/09/2020 23:44

Where do you live? Everywhere takes cash maybe odd few places I’ve seen says card only ( kfc and wickes spring to mind?) most places prefer card payment but it’s not compulsory

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/09/2020 23:45

Why is a fold in a note an issue?

hastingsmua1 · 06/09/2020 00:04

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Why is a fold in a note an issue?
The pay-in machine at my bank wouldn’t accept them. I couldn’t straighten them out enough, so by the time the note compartment closed to count the cash, they ended up bunching back up. I tried a few times but the creases are too deep I guess

Use them in the corner shop or similar,

MidnightHangingTree · 06/09/2020 00:08

I've paid (folded) cash into Halifax recently and also into the Post Office. Both accepted them no problem.

WithIcePlease · 06/09/2020 00:51

Parked today and pay and display machine had no option other than cash
So keep change in your car for parking and pound coins for trolleys? Tipping taxi drivers, restaurants? Markets sometimes cash only

safariboot · 06/09/2020 04:17

I think if my bank wouldn't accept me depositing cash I'd be looking for a new bank. We're not in the severe phase of the epidemic any more. Most shops take cash though they'd prefer not to (but I understand shifting £50s is always a problem).

QuitMoaning · 06/09/2020 09:22

@hastingsmua1

Thank you all! Post office visit is the top of my list!

@QuitMoaning which banks are they with? It might just be a branch specific thing but Barclays branch staff said the counter wouldn’t accept cash pay ins. I did wonder what people who predominantly use cash were supposed to do!

The business account is with Barclays and uses a large town centre branch. They didn’t take cash during lockdown but they do now.

Not sure where my mother banks.
