Hello
I have a lovely friend who is going through a tough time.
She’s a native of Northern Ireland now living in England.
I want to send her some treats from ‘home’ to cheer her up and have found a wonderful local to me butcher that can courier overnight to GB.
So what traditional Ulster fayre is hard to get in England?
I’m thinking Veg Roll
Proper Stew
Champ
They also offer a range of breads
So sending soda, wheaten, potato bread
As well as snacks Tayto (yellow packet) & Maine Brown lemonade.

Very grateful for all suggestions

All of what you have mentioned plus I'd kill for Veda bread Smile

Would she be interested in her local weekly newspaper maybe, my mum always used to send my sister ours! Also, fifteens!

Proper sausages, the sausages in England are awful.

Thankfully I’ve moved back home now, but if I’d received your package when I was away, I’d have cried for about a week. It’s lovely!!

Oh yes, proper steak sausages. I cannot find them easily in England

I would swap my firstborn for regular deliveries of Veda bread! Also any kind of buns (fifteens, empire biscuits, date and wheaten slice) and a pound of Colraine cheddar to go with salt and vinegar Hunky Dory crisps!

LoeliaPonsonby · 31/08/2020 21:10

Also Genesis Bakery should do an exile delivery (so they should). Would subscribe to that!

TorkTorkBam · 31/08/2020 21:11

My friend hugged me when I presented him with a box of Tayto crisps.

@LoeliaPonsonby I used to be a big fan of Genesis when it was owned by the brothers but I think since it was bought out it’s just not quite as good - loved their pancakes

Dunno about your friend but I’ve always missed my dromona butter when I’m away from home. You’d need a cool box to courier it in though.

I would add Tayto cheese and onion crisps, some Nutty Krust and apple pancakes! (I travelled to N Ireland last year and took an empty cabin bag so I could fill it with goodies on the way home...)

What? Are Hunky Dorys not available elsewhere? I had no idea. All those poor people who don't know what they're missing.

I second Veda and butter. Also tea - I've been posted Punjana in the past (it's sold here but hard to find) and Club lemon (or orange).

huglessduglas · 31/08/2020 23:27

Fantastic ideas thank you.

The butchers post it all in a cool box - I will see if they will let me add a Veda and nutty Krust and the local gossip rag.
Just seen they do SD Bells tea do I’ll add that in as well - we spent many a wasted afternoon in there chatting up the Campbell boys 🙈
What about Sukies - my hangover cure of choice - is that available?

Cannot believe there’s a world out there without Hunky Dorys Buffalo

I'm NI living in Canada, previously lived in GB. Things I've always missed:

Veda
Fifteens
Sunblest or Genesis giant pancakes
Tayto

Club rock shandy is good too.
