The simple things in life are the best

Earlier I bought a small potted rose plant and I keep looking over at it and I just love it. It is such a small and simple thing but it is really making me feel so happy. I have never had any living plants in the house before (aside from bouquets of flowers) and there is just something lovely about having a living, breathing plant in the living space.

I also had a bath with candles and candlelight is just so wonderful too. It is so deeply comforting, especially now the nights are starting to draw in.

Just feeling grateful for these small things in life. :)

What are your favourite 'simple things' of life?

Filling the bird table and watching the birds swoop down to feast Smile
Waking up to and sitting out in lovely sunshine Smile

my house plants make me so happy, learning to care for them, even managing a bug outbreak and seeing them grow. feeding the birds, cooking for friends

Coffee from my Hungry Caterpillar mug every morning.

Op do you have a garden? If so next spring try growing some flowers from seed. I promise you it’s really easy and so exciting watching them grow.
You will be bursting with pride when they finally flower.

For me it's the feeling of starting a new book. Preferably in a big hot bubble bath.

Also the content feeling when the house is all clean and tidy and there's something nice cooking away.

Waking up and realising the cat is asleep on the end of the bed!

On a Saturday when I have blitzed the house and then I light a lovely candle and have a glass of wine !

A bowl of warm porridge on a cold morning.

A cup of something warm, and a few biscuits, on a rainy day (even better when shared with some friends)

A healthy garden full of wildlife.

A mystery plant sprouting randomly from an unlikely location.

A ray of sunlight through the nearest window.

Sitting in the kitchen listening to some music while the dish washer and washing machine do their thing.

Checking your kids are peacefully asleep, and look safe and comfy, before going to bed.

Looking at my beachcombing finds whilst having a rum and coke
Seeing a new leaf on my ficus
Putting flowers in a vase and watching the buds open

Being cuddled on the sofa, candle lit, warm, something good on TV & it's chucking it down outside.

Sat down last night after a busy day with a manicure kit and did my nails with my feet up. Very satisfying and I now have nice pale pink nails.

I think happiness can be so much a state of mind. OP, your post made me think of this lovely poem by Wendy Cope:

At lunchtime I bought a huge orange
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I had a half.

And that orange it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park
This is peace and contentment. It’s new.

The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all my jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I’m glad I exist.

For me it's:

A cup of tea in bed on a non work morning

Starting a new knitting project or book by a favourite author.

Yes to growing a plant from seed! Did this for the first time during lockdown!

Bath, clean pjs and clean bedding

Great thread OP

Silence! Every weekend morning I sit in complete silence, while everyone else is asleep, with a mug of tea then cup of coffee.

I love it!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/08/2020 09:37

Being woken by one of my DDs jumping into bed with me. I may grumble about it (and their cold feet).. But it's the best way to wake up.

These two. I really should be doing something useful.

Bopping about in the kitchen to music. Cuddling the cat.

OldKingCole · 29/08/2020 10:36

Sunshine - the very best thing in life - just wish we saw more of it!

LouiseNW · 29/08/2020 10:38

Growing things. I stuck some olives from one of our trees in the earth a few days ago and I’ll be so happy if anything sprouts 😃

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 29/08/2020 10:39

I live for the simple things in life. There’s just nothing better!

Knowing I have smoked salmon, a little salmon pate, salad and crusty bread for lunch later.
Feeding the birds in my garden.
Seeing the buzzards flying over my house.
My dog snort-snoring beside me in bed.
Putting on my beats headphones to listen to music and telling my husband and the kids I am out of service- DO NOT DISTURB! 😂
