Teaspoon for scale. Do I need to throw away contents of entire food cupboard? Ew.

Weevils of some sort?

Namechange6005 · 23/08/2020 17:29

Probably weevils and absolutely chuck them away and also check the rest of the cupboard contents. Our old neighbours had them and they managed to get in to my kitchen!!!

yep that's weevils. they will also be in all the other open packets eg flour, biscuits etc. All those foodstuffs will now be infested with weevil eggs and you will have a permanent infestation without drastic action.

you will need to throw away all open packets (and any new packets where there is any kind of gap were something could crawl in. stuff completely sealed in plastic is safe) give the cupboard a really thorough clean and invest in lock&lock Tupperware to seal open packets into. if they can't access any open food packets the small number that survive the clear out (eg hiding in a crack within the cupboard) will die out.

We get those in our rice sometimes. Tbh I just put the rice in the freezer for a few days till the bugs are all dead then pick them out. I buy rice in big 5kg or 10kg bags though so it's a massive waste to throw it out. If I'd only bought a little bag I'd just chuck it.

Bummer. And ew.

Thanks peeps. A quick google (could have done this before posting here I guess!) says they're harmless if they're eaten ... bit of extra protein I guess!.. but yes I'll do a clear out I think. Cupboard probably full of things a tad past their use by date anyway 😳
