I’m not sure if it’s relevant but I’m 39 weeks pregnant , being induced tomorrow. Since last night my tongue has been super sore and I checked in the mirror and noticed these risen white patches all over it . It’s especially sore on the sides .
I’ll mention it to when I go in tomorrow anyway but just wondered if anyone else has ever had this ?
I’ll post photos in the comments

I’m no expert but could it be thrush?

dotty12345 · 23/08/2020 08:09

I would think thrush?

That looks like geographic tongue which is usually harmless but given your stage of pregnancy I would contact your midwife ASAP this morning

Rubychard · 23/08/2020 08:12

Geographic tongue. Harmless.

BruceAndMarley · 23/08/2020 08:14

I did think it might be thrush but the patches won’t wipe off, and I don’t have an unpleasant taste in my mouth, and there’s no redness inside my mouth or throat?

Geographic tongue. I used to get it a lot in pregnancy. It was especially bad if I ate plums, weirdly.

BruceAndMarley · 23/08/2020 08:25

@BwanaMakubwa funny you should say that, last night I have a plum , are they quite acidic ? I’ve also drank a lot of fruit juice as I’ve been feeling a bit sick and juice seems to help , so maybe I’ve overdone it

I’ve got this too (39+5), did you ever find out what it was? Did it go after delivery?

Manyoaks · 18/09/2020 15:41

I also think geographic tongue I get it when I eat lot of tomatoes

AdaColeman · 18/09/2020 15:45

Another vote for geographic tongue, often stress related. Speak to your pharmacist, they might be able to recommend something, if it’s uncomfortable for you.

BlusteryShowers · 18/09/2020 15:51

I get geographic tongue as well

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 18/09/2020 16:17

Geographic tongue. Also had it when pregnant. Don't worry about it, it'll go.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.... but I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant and have just developed geographic tongue! Did yours go after pregnancy? The doctors have said it could be a combination or aspirin, being run down, stressed, pregnant and looking after a toddler but nothing to pin it on and unsure when/if it will go after pregnancy! Have you suffered with it since?!
OrDis · 11/12/2020 09:02

Hi! Mine literally went as soon as I gave birth. Literally the first time I checked it in the mirror a few days after coming home from hospital and it had completely gone, so I suspect it is/was just pregnancy. Fingers crossed yours goes too.

mum0fone · 11/12/2020 18:50

Amazing! Thank you. And congratulations on the birth of your little one!

Roisin2023 · 22/07/2023 11:39

does anyone have geographic tongue with just one patch always coming back in the exact same place? I was told I have it but it always returns in the exact same spot. I’m starting to get worried about it as everything I’ve read about geographic tongue says it moves to different areas of the tongue and mine doesn’t

Bubblepanda · 23/07/2023 14:17

Yes mine comes back in the same spot down the side of my tongue. Usually triggered by tomato's and strawberries and often for no reason at all
