Stolen phone - any way to register the IMEI as stolen?

Does anyone know if a details of stolen phone can be registered anywhere so that if someone takes it for repairs it can be ‘flagged’ as nicked?

Maybe I’ve been watching too many crime shows on tv.

But this would be quite useful I think. Or a device that makes the phone self destruct...

Don't you just report it stolen to your service provider and they zap it?

NMPR - thenmpr.com/home

So fast! Yes the service provider zapped it but I was wondering if some ratfink took it into a store to have it unlocked or something fixed - so they check the numbers to make sure it’s bit stolen? Then thrown them in irons and beat them with nettles?

I think places that unblock phones know they are stolen and don't care.

So no self-destruct button either? How disappointing...

I took my daughter’s iPhone to an Apple registered place to be unlocked when she managed to forget her password enough times to lock it down. I was quite bemused that they didn’t take any details at all, just unlocked it and handed it over half an hour later with no questions asked at all.
