Maggots

Omg it's not a good day. I hoover every day. I wash pots up everyday. Infact over the weekend My kitchen was repainted by us and we cleaned the tops of the cupboards etc so it's nice and clean. This morning I came down and noticed a couple of maggots next to the washer. I lifted up my mop bucket. There were more under their. I lifted up a handbag that was on the floor and there's maggots under that. They are under a pair of shoes. They are under the decorating paint tin. There were a couple under the rubbish bag but that doesn't seem to be the source. The doors are open everyday at the moment all day. We have children so crumbs are a thing but I hoover daily so they are cleaned up regularly.

Why has this happened? Mortified and grossed out. I feel disgusting.

All it takes is a bit of food spillage or bin juice and you can get them. Sounds like something got spilled and as it was unnoticeable and underneath things the maggots had a habitat. Usually a fly will lay eggs but not have the right habitat, but only old food spillage plus heat plus not being wiped up will equal maggots.

It might have been an apple core of banana that know has been completely used up by them making them look like they're just randomly there

If they were scattered all over, it's because they've eaten their food source and were on the move. Could be something under a cupboard/cooker/fridge. Dead mouse, or piece of food dropped.

They're full sized maggots by the sound of it, so would have been laid as eggs in the last week or so.

@popcornlover

Nope my floors are cleaned 2-3 times a week and Hoovered daily. Certainly not dirty here thank you! My bin gets them on hot days. Got nappies in it so I presume they enjoy the crappy nappies. But it's not my fault if a fly gets in and lays eggs is it.

Your garbage is as grubby an anyone elses. Flies would come in your windows on a hot day too. It's nothing to do with being disgusting. It's the first time it's ever happened and we have just decorated and washed our kitchen down too!!!

Have you been to a pick your own place recently? We did and picked a punnet of berries that DH was keen to turn into jam. Next day he started jamming and I walked by to stick the kettle on and instantly noticed the bowl (now half full of berries) was wriggling with maggots 🤢😂 he carried on and finished turning the berries into jam so we have now very, very boiled maggotberry jam that I refuse to eat 🤣

So, have you been to pick any fruit recently perhaps and brought maggots home that way?

Remember they're literally just baby flies. So they're not coming from anywhere as such. Just a fly laid eggs somewhere that seemed positive for growth and the eggs hatched. They're not going to magically multiply or anything!

I feel a lot better about baby flies these days now I think of them as babies. They're wriggly and gross, but it's OK.

The most likely cause of maggots ime is a raw chicken or raw beef packet not rinsed out and put in the bin. They breed in the bin then manage to worm their way out and look for places to go under things then hatch into flies.

Its traumatic.

This happened to us! We had a full-time housekeeper so our house was immaculate (or so we thought). There was a horrible smell in the kitchen and we just couldn’t locate it. Went on for a few days then DH picked up the Nespresso machine... underneath it were LOADS of maggots.

Throw a handful of mothballs in the bottom of your bin. Keep your bin clean. Flypaper has no noxious fumes or chemicals, but can help prevent maggots by catching flies. Mind you, I have the stomach of a trained nurse.

Check your ceiling (sounds bizarre I know). Years ago, a friend kept finding random ones over a few days - on draining board etc... turns out there were loads on the ceiling. I 'counselled' over the phone as was too creeped out to help in person in case one fell on me!

I took the bag out the bin and double tied it and put it in the wheelie bin. Im going to clean the kitchen to within an inch of its life and make sure i dont get anymore. For pp's that have had these critters before does the "problem" ever go away on its own or do you need to seek help? I know that may be a daft question but ive never had maggots before

I spayed lots of fly killer in the bin & kept the bin closed until the next day.

Hi, I am having the same problem, I keep the house very clean, found them yesterday under bags and shoes, deep cleaned everything in the house and seemed to be fine but come down stairs this morning to find them under shoes again in the hallway. Did you manage to find the source of your problem or fix it? I feel like I am losing my mind trying to get rid of them, it’s so gross!

@crazycookie58 Did you manage to get rid of yours?

I found two, one after the other, in the kitchen doorway. Sent the robot round the kitchen then the (carpeted) breakfast room and hallway. And there was some in the hoover when I emptied it 😫 so they’re obviously not coming from the kitchen.

So creeped out right now.
