How long does it take a complete beginner to teach themselves how to play electric guitar?

To a reasonable standard?

Considering no prior instrument experience and what are the best internet resources for this?

I think this depends on what you mean by "a reasonable standard"..... 'so you can sing along to it' - not so long. To be Mark Knopfler ? - possible forever.

My dd took up electric guitar, looked around the internet for a bit, and sounded very pleasant to my ears, within a few weeks. However, she had a good understanding of music / chords / keys etc from playing piano and flute and doing GCSE music. She wouldn't put her hand up to say she was a guitarist though, but she gets a lot of enjoyment from 'having a go'.
