Washing smells of nothing at all - I’ve tried it all!

This is boring but it’s annoying me ...

I love the smell of clean laundry, although I know some people don’t want the fragrance. I can always smell my mum’s and my friend’s clothes, but mine smell of nothing. They smell of nothing straight out of the machine despite using softener, then of nothing after tumble drying despite using softener sheets. They are clean, but no fragrance at all! I don’t want them to be strong, but I love that smell of drying laundry.

All I can think is that my loads are too big (my washing machine takes 10kg though I don’t fill it) and the dispenser sets the maximums too low. Is there anything else I can try, please? It’s not just that I’m used to the smell either, because I optimistically try different products every time!

Me too!
It smells lovely whilst washing and whilst in the tumble dryer but once it’s dry there is no smell whatsoever.

chobmon · 17/08/2020 14:16

Thank you for your reply @Borderstotheleftofme! I don’t think mine even smells nice while washing or drying, really. It just smells of water, I suppose.

It’s so frustrating though - what are other people with lovely smelling washing doing differently?! I wonder if I need a different machine, but it’s not old Hmm

Following as I've never had washing that smells nice, it just smells of nothing!

I switched to the fairy Gel and original conditioner because I love what they smell like. I also find the laundry smells nicest after being on the cotton setting wash. Maybe because it's a longer programme? Also Maybe get a cleaner for your machine and run that through on hot and start from afresh?

SoupDragon · 17/08/2020 14:22

Those scent boosters really make it smell.

Have you always used the same products? You can get used to the smell

doadeer · 17/08/2020 14:24

My washing smells really strong, I love it! I use a lot of lenor and tumbledry straight away. I notice if I've left in the machine for longer when it finishes it doesn't smell as nice dry.

doadeer · 17/08/2020 14:24

I just use fairy powder for the actual washing

MeDented · 17/08/2020 14:24

I noticed a big difference when I swapped back to powder from liquid / capsules. The powder makes my washing smell much better, even my husband noticed. I have stayed with powder ever since.

avocuddl · 17/08/2020 14:26

Is it not cause you're just used to the smell? 🤔 agree the unstoppable deffo help!

cosmo30 · 17/08/2020 14:27

I agree that powder smells better than liquids. Also the little scent booster things you put in the drum. Sometimes I use a tiny bit of zoflora in the softener compartment

linmanuel · 17/08/2020 14:27

Ariel bio smells amazing

Northernsoullover · 17/08/2020 14:28

My laundry never smells nice if Iine or tumble dry it. The only time it retains a fresh smell is if I dry it indoors with a dehumidifier running. If it dries indoors naturally without a dehydrated it smells off. Its such a bloody kerfuffle.

olivo · 17/08/2020 14:30

The t for me has always been the bold lavender powder tablets but hey don't seem to do them any more. The actual powder and the liquid tabs smell totally different!

purpleboy · 17/08/2020 14:31

Overdoing the tumble drying usually kills the smell, I'd try doing half washes, take the heavy things out, (jumpers, onesies, duvet covers) and tumble the rest in 20 minute cycles.

justasking111 · 17/08/2020 14:33

My linen is lovely after drying on the line, perhaps a tumbler kills aromas.

I have exactly the same problem! I just don’t understand it, I want that nice fresh clean linen smell that others seem to achieve, like yours, my washing smells of just water also known as nothing!
lljkk · 17/08/2020 14:41

I dislike detergent smells. Must be a spray or something you can add.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 17/08/2020 14:43

You’re probably just nose blind to the scent now.

doadeer · 17/08/2020 14:46

Tumbledrying doesn't remove the smell in mine - it makes it much stronger.

It's still a lovely smell when they dry on the line in the breeze but sadly I don't have a garden.

I just did my bedding last night with tons of lenor and it smells lush

CircleofWillis · 17/08/2020 14:50

Try drying your washing on a line either inside or outside. For me the smell is so much stronger than from the dryer.

isthismylifenow · 17/08/2020 14:53

I don't live in the UK anymore but since moving I see we do not have an option of bio and non bio washing powders/liquids. And I think my washing smells better here and I think its because I use a bio type powder. I have bought a baby range liquid which I use for delicates (although it is not called non bio, I just assume it is) and if I use that, then the washing doesn't really smell of anything at all.

So perhaps try a bio powder if you don't already and see if that makes a difference.

I don't think it is the washing machine itself as when we moved we brought it over so i am using the same one.

Jeremyironsnothing · 17/08/2020 14:54

Mine doesn't smells far as I know which is how I like it.
A friend used to pass on lovely clothes her dd had grown out of. They were all beautifully washed and ironed but they smelt so strongly of her brand of soap powder, that I had to rewash and iron them all straight away. I hate strong scents of cleaning products.

bumbleb33s · 17/08/2020 14:55

I don't use any particular brand of washing liquid, just what's on offer at the time. I use a handful of unstoppables, a cap of washing liquid and a cap of lenor, it mostly goes on the line but sometimes tumble dryer and always smells nice when dry. Oh and I always only 3/4 fill my washer, that could be the issue, that it's too full.

Woodendollymix · 17/08/2020 14:58

I too have changed back to washing powder from pods etc. and I can smell the washing more, but then I line dry as much as possible as the dryer, I find does take away the nice washed smell.

Beautiful3 · 17/08/2020 15:00

I had the same problem until I switched to fairy powder. Even the kids commented on it smelling good!
