Wondering what on earth life is like right now for people who always have a continuous cough

OK, very late to be asking this, but.... how the hell do you cope? I find myself stifling the occasional cough and involuntarily flinching away when somebody else coughs when out. It's only just occurred to me that I very rarely hear anybody coughing any more. Are the regular coughers all hiding indoors for fear of getting a mouthful of abuse?

Agree must be a pain... I coughed a load of times today for maybe 3 minutes, after swallowing a flying bug while walking thru a park. I kind of decided not to give a crap about the startled looks people were giving me.

I have a constant need to clear my throat following an operation. If i try to suppress it i get a hacking cough...have had some looks and tuts...

It's miserable. Like Buzzer I have a constant need to clear my throat / let out a small cough following surgery and I feel like a social pariah if I have to do it in public. I always cover my mouth but several people have given me dirty looks or moved away from me.

On the plus side, I can generally suppress the need with a small sip of water and so I suspect I have never been so well hydrated as I have since March!

I don't go out.
I have brittle asthma and a continuous horrible cough, and need to clear my lungs as much as I can.
I can't wear a mask either.

tiredanddangerous · 15/08/2020 19:40

I've had a cough since March thanks to hayfever and asthma. I've just stayed away from people to be honest! Online shopping and walks at quiet times of the day.

DH has a Ramapril cough from his Ramapril blood pressure medication, he also gets hay fever so does cough quite a lot, he doesn’t go out where lots of people are though.

Marmaladey · 15/08/2020 19:51

My DH has a constant cough from a medical condition. Back in March/early April I did a lot of "why are you coughing? Is that your usual cough? Is it a new cough?" and giving him hard stares. He also did a lot of "do you think I am coughing more than normal?"

It was exhausting. We have chilled out now thank god.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/08/2020 19:54

That does sound very tough. Flowers

Marmaladey

I did that, kept asking DH about his cough because I hadn’t really noticed it much before but at the start I suddenly started noticing it a lot and was watching and listening for it and questioning him.
Poor thing is upstairs coughing now after his run.

Boredandsingle · 15/08/2020 20:10

It’s horrible- I get a cough quite frequently- either everybody stares or gives disapproving looks!

Bellablahhole · 15/08/2020 20:14

I have the same condition, IHaveBrilloHair. I avoid being where other people are as much as possible. It's awful.

user1471453601 · 15/08/2020 20:21

I have mild asthma, moderate COPD and I take ramiril too. I cough all the time. . I also have hayfever, so I sneeze too.

If I went out, which I haven't since the middle of March, I think I'd have to walk around ringing a bell and shouting, unclean.

Luckily, my family who I live with, are used to me coughing and sputtering throughout the day

Ask the Major who appeared on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

CormoranStrike · 15/08/2020 20:34

I got put on ramipril four weeks ago and get lots of looks for my cough.

DarkMintChocolate · 15/08/2020 20:45

I had a cold the first weekend of February. I have have a tickly cough ever since - I am always having to explain it!

Missingthesea · 15/08/2020 20:53

People with a Ramapril cough - you can ask your GP for a different medication Smile

mmgirish · 15/08/2020 22:54

I'm a cougher! Always have been. I live in a place where we've been wearing masks for a few months now. People do stare if I cough but I have been boosted to the front of a queue in a shop a few weeks ago as they were so keen to get me out!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 16/08/2020 09:43

@ruabon1 did you watch Quiz? We loved that. Also Jon Ronson wrote a good article about the trial.

I really do feel for you all. A constant cough is wretched enough on its own, but now... God.
