Why are regional accents so over egged on TV?

Watched the one show tonight, now I'm a geordie now living in wales so I'm no stranger to a good accent!

But why are they all so OTT on tv, Alex Jones is ridiculous and Chris Ramsey's accent is so bad it sounds like he's pretending to be geordie.

Lorraine Kelly is another fine example.

I mean we don't want to go back to the BBC world service but why can't people just talk in their normal voice

I agree, especially Northern accents, Paddy McGuinness and his over the top Bolton accent 😐

LockdownDowner · 13/08/2020 20:21

I have met Alex Jones, she sounds ty he same on and off tv.... what do youwant her to sound like?

GreekOddess · 13/08/2020 20:27

Alex Jones just sounds normal to me.

Pebblexox · 13/08/2020 20:30

I agree that on fictional shows they're often exaggerated, however I think yabu as that is there accents. That's how the actually speak. They aren't putting it on for your entertainment.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/08/2020 20:30

And Paddy McG sounds just like that off screen too. As do a number of my relatives?

I suspect the answer is that some stupid fucker is hiring The Provincials!!

Pebblexox · 13/08/2020 20:30

Their* sorry.

MozzchopsThirty · 13/08/2020 20:30

A little less shrill OTT Welsh!!!

I don't know anyone who speaks like her in RL

Chris Ramsey has a podcast with his wife and they both sound exactly as he does on TV, they live up North, hence he has a Northern accent.

Shocker, people have regional accents, why on earth would they play up or down how they speak? Would you rather they all had the same estuary accent so as not to offend your ears?

x2boys · 13/08/2020 20:38

I don't think Paddy McGuiness ,s accent is over the top ,I live in Bolton ,some people are very broad

picklemewalnuts · 13/08/2020 20:39

I met someone recently whose accent startled me. I'd assumed that accent was a caricature of a real accent but no.

I think we tend to hear a lot of sanitised, smoothed out versions of regional accents, and the real thing seems exaggerated.

Pebblexox · 13/08/2020 20:40

@MozzchopsThirty my dad and his family are welsh, and I know several people who speak exactly like that. Some have much broader accents than other. Just because you don't know them doesn't mean they don't exist.

tinytemper66 · 13/08/2020 20:42

I think Alex Jones has a mild Welsh accent. Unlike my own!

PaundryLouder · 13/08/2020 20:47

I don't think they do tbh.

Wtfdidwedo · 13/08/2020 20:47

Where in Wales do you live? Alex Jones is from Carmarthenshire and went to a Welsh speaking school so has a fairly typical accent given that. My SIL has a similar accent; she's spent twenty years living and working on the border but still retains her accent. I don't think it's that unusual.

IhateBoswell · 13/08/2020 20:49

I’m from Bolton myself x2boys, I think he occasionally over eggs it. Could also be my dislike for him colouring my view of him too I suppose.

Tlollj · 13/08/2020 20:51

Danny Dyer is another one. Nobody talks like that. Too put on.

MozzchopsThirty · 13/08/2020 20:56

Of course people have regional accents 🙄 I do too

I just think some celebs totally over do it like 'ooh look how Scottish I am'

It irritates the tits off me

I could take you to pubs where I grew up full of them.
toomanyplants · 13/08/2020 21:00

The way the scouse accent is spoken by certain tv people makes me cringe beyond words, and more often than not they're from places on the outskirts of the city!!
Cilla black and sporty spice spring to mind!
We sit watching the telly like "wtf no one talks like that"

My Boas talks like that. He’s from Cambridge Confused

It’s mockney.

topcat2014 · 13/08/2020 21:02

I am reminded of the French and Saunders Lorraine spoof

"hello, and if you've just joined us.. you've missed nothing"

noswaith · 13/08/2020 21:44

Gavin Williamson does this as well, incidentally.

Wasn't Cilla from Allerton? Sporty Spice is a bad wool.
Wilko312 · 13/08/2020 23:30
