Spooky motorway incident last night!

I currently have a courtesy car. I ended up driving very late last night and it was pretty much pitch black (2 hour drive home, motorway).

Anyway, loads of cars kept flashing me and then beeping. I couldn't work out why. But something felt very odd. I couldn't see the rode behind me in my side mirrors. To the left was black. This man drove beside me whilst he was on the fast line and done a hand movement to suggest lights.

I pulled over at the next turn off and came to a side street shortly after. Looked like lights were on '3' to suggest fully on? My own car is automatic lights that adjust so I had forgotten all about this stuff.

Anyway, back on the motorway thinking it was sorted and I still couldn't see well. So more cars beeped. I was frightened that nobody could see me until it was too late so pulled over to the next place and it was this police only thing that went like a turn off but was no entry. I panicked. I couldn't build up speed to enter the motorway again like a hard shoulder. I'd have to reverse and join again like that but there was no space really and it was busy for late at night.

Another car pulled up and all sorts of things went through my head. This woman came to my car and tapped on the window. I rolled it down and she smiled and looked so safe. She told me what to do. The lights came on full beam (it was a bit to the left like the indicator). She told me to keep going and I'll eventually join the M11 again. I looked again. She was gone. Bright blue car gone. Nowhere to be seen. Vanished.

She didn't reverse out and didn't go in front.

Spooky.

Wow. I love anything woo. I think she was probably the ghost of someone who had passed there. Have you googled the area for crashes.

GreyGardens88 · 13/08/2020 09:24

One assumes you could no longer see her due to the glare from your headlights, or something similar

RangeOfCall · 13/08/2020 09:36

I'll have to have a look. Wouldn't I have been able to see her in my mirrors though? A car doesn't just become invisible, even if it is dark

No idea but I do love a spooky story.

Can you post on area FB page to thank the driver if the car and see if anyone comes forward?

SilverOtter · 13/08/2020 09:41

Ooooo! Love a spooky story! Sounds like she was a guardian angel or somethingSmile

RangeOfCall · 13/08/2020 09:44

Does anyone know what area that would be? I don't even know what it's called, those little police side road things. Goes round until it joins the motorway before. I didn't know they existed.

M11 anyway. 15 miles from Watford I think. I think not far from Southend Road (nowhere near Southend)

who knows, but it sounds like you just met your guardian angel. i wouldn't try to overthink it, just be thankful she came along and sorted you out. some things simply can't be explained.

popcornlover · 13/08/2020 10:11

Oh come on, that stuff’s not real. More likely your mind playing tricks on you.

DullDullWeather · 13/08/2020 10:12

That's wonderful

As a PP said, could have been somebody who had a fatal accident there or , indeed, could have been your Guardian Angel .

Glad it all worked out ok for you , with some help .

No, there is always more than one sensible poster.

This is in Chat, not the "Woo" topic.

blacktop · 13/08/2020 10:15

Christ OP are you not embarrassed to post this? Dangerous driving? What a tool. How could you not check something so basic as the headlights Hmm

VeggieSausageRoll · 13/08/2020 10:21

I'd be more scared about the fact you don't know how to use car lights than a scenario that likely has a logical explanation to be honest. Did you not notice that the dash dials and things weren't lit? Did you not get out to actually check the lights were working the first time you stopped?

(The 3 that you were looking at was likely the positioning of the beam that you change depending on how heavy the load in the car is)

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/08/2020 10:25

Watford? Southend Road? Are you sure you were on the M11?

Sunrise234 · 13/08/2020 10:29

I'm worried that you couldn't tell if your lights were on or not if it was pitch black!
Were you really tired or anything? Which could account for not realising the women had left.

MissKittyCat · 13/08/2020 10:40

Is the mystery area the place near Chigwell that was going to be services but is now just used by the police?

Noextremes2017 · 13/08/2020 10:48

You didn’t know you were driving without lights on? Unbelievable.

Knocka · 13/08/2020 11:07

This.

OP, what was actually the issue -- were you driving with no lights at all? That's the scary part of the story!

Finfintytint · 13/08/2020 11:11

Fucking Hell OP. You sound dangerous.

diamente · 13/08/2020 11:14

How can you not realise you don't have lights on Confused not sure you should be driving tbh

WhiskersPete · 13/08/2020 11:14

The only scary thing about this is the amount of accidents you could have caused driving down the motorway with no lights on.

You seriously need to check you understand where the lights are next time you drive an unfamiliar car.

Mrsmorton · 13/08/2020 11:17

I'd be utterly mortified if I were you OP, not trying to ascribe something supernatural to my dangerous incompetence.

Yeah, everything looking dark should be a clue.

This story is scary all right but not because of ghosts

I believe I did have my lights on but they were very dim.

My car has LED headlights that automatically come on so I wasn't familiar with it all, my fault of course.

It's an honest mistake. I passed my test January and haven't had any hiccups since

I thought since this was a similar car, it too would have them automatically. I know that was a silly assumption now
