As above, omg that’s since March 146,000 a month. So frightening for people who are still having to work.

I don't understand - surely it is frightening for those who have lost their jobs and know that it will be hard to find another with so many people looking? I'm one of those people.

Phones4u boss on the radio this morning summed it up perfectly. Its like putting an elephant on the scales and then acting astonished that it actually does weigh more than 100kgs.

granadagirl · 12/08/2020 15:05

That’s what I meant !
For the ones that have lost their job and have still years to work before pension age

You sound surprised. Isn't it obvious this would happen if you lockdown the entire UK economy for months on end?

It will get much worse than this I'm sure.

PimlicoJo · 12/08/2020 15:21

Granadagirl sorry, I completely misunderstood!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 12/08/2020 15:24

I know people who are now anticipating their 8-10th redundancy since 2000.

It seems that people who've been vulnerable once continue that pattern of vulnerability.

It's wretched. I know that the Chancellor is promising that nobody who wants to work will be abandoned and there will be 'hope and optimism' for all but I'd like some detail if he wouldn't mind.

Devlesko · 12/08/2020 15:28

Yet I read that unemployment was at the lowest for 5 years.
Just goes to say you can't believe everything you read.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 12/08/2020 15:34

Sorry, auto-correct fail, Sunak said "opportunity" not optimism:

“I’ve said before that hard times were ahead, and today’s figures confirm that hard times are here. Hundreds of thousands of people have already lost their jobs, and sadly in the coming months many more will.

“But while there are difficult choices to be made ahead, we will get through this, and I can assure people that nobody will be left without hope or opportunity.”

It's all bollocks.

I've been made redundant. Furlough wasn't an option. Company refused to do it.

There are so few jobs it's a bun fight to even get an interview.

UC isn't available for everyone. I'm on JSA which will run out after 6 months.

Hope to have a new job by then, but I've had 1 interview on 2 months, so who knows?

What happens to me financially after 6 months Boris?

Wingingitsince2018 · 12/08/2020 16:55

It is terrifying. I am currently furloughed and I feel like I am just waiting for the inevitable to happen in October when the scheme ends.

The figures will be much worse at the end of the year.
