What can I see in the sky?

I'm in London. Looking east, there's what looks like a row of maybe three white lights, very close together so must be one thing, not moving. It's not overhead, it's at maybe a 45 degree angle to the horizon. I googled ISS and it doesn't seem to be that.

The way 2020's been going I wouldn't be surprised if aliens had decided to rock up.

Iwonder777 · 11/08/2020 21:49
Confused
Cakestandkitchen · 11/08/2020 21:49

There is an app called sky view. That’s quite good at telling you stuff like this.

Bloodybridget · 11/08/2020 21:49

Yes, can follow your reasoning there @Wannabefarmer . .

Help Grinbeam me up Scottie

Bloodybridget · 11/08/2020 21:53

DP and I have decided it is moving, but kind of swinging to and fro, not travelling. @Cakestandkitchen I looked for the app but am getting lots of random results.

I realised it could just be a distant helicopter that we can't hear. It just disappeared! Sorry to get all dramatic!

Bloodybridget · 11/08/2020 22:02

Thanks @funkychilli, our neighbour thinks it's a drone.

It’s the Vogons in initial planning stage of the intergalactic hyperspace super expressway.

More details tomorrow!

Will you have found the filing cabinet by then? (Watch out for the, errm, stairs.)

Oh for fucks sake is this something else that's going to kill us all

PeachMoon · 11/08/2020 22:23

It could be the Perseids (meteor shower visible this time of year)?

Muddybootsblister · 11/08/2020 22:23

I’m in Devon and my husband is excitedly watching some sort of meteors that are passing by this week. Looked like a fleeting stripe in the sky to me but he was very pleased... He has also (allegedly) identified Jupiter, Pluto and Saturn but I said to him ‘you’re talking out of Uranus’.

saltycat · 11/08/2020 22:24

Perseid showers. Meteors or shooting stars, they are amazing.

Feminist10101 · 11/08/2020 22:25

It’s Elon Musk’s Starlink.

In other words part of his 40,000 pieces of space junk.

FloweringFlowers · 11/08/2020 22:25

We’re east London, dh been out watching meteor shower this evening.

Won’t be anywhere near dark enough in London yet for that. And they don’t travel across the sky in a line. They’re more like a starburst from the Perseus constellation.

I should think Earth is the last fucking place they'd want to be visiting!

It's the peak today/tomorrow I think but if it's cloudy where you are you might only be seeing some?

Perseid meteor showers? Seen a few flashes ( not lightning) and a couple of what looked like shooting stars here.

Feminist10101 · 11/08/2020 22:27

Jupiter and Saturn yes. No way Pluto without very strong binoculars or a telescope

RiftGibbon · 11/08/2020 22:28

The Vogons would be quite a welcome distraction right now. Let me just get my towel and have some peanuts.

LunaLoveFood · 11/08/2020 22:30

There is a meteor shower predicted for around midnight if you're still looking then.

saltycat · 11/08/2020 22:45

There is more to this world than Covid. The majesty of the universe is just amazing.
