anyone want to guess what is wrong with my daughters eye?

Name changed as I'm going to post a picture and I have spoken to people in RL about it.

My daughter had has a problem with her eye for just over 2 weeks. Prior to that she was complaining of pain in her eyebrow but she can be a bit of a drama llama so I didnt think anything of it.

2 weeks ago her eye was swollen when she woke up. I took her to eye casualty as it was painful and she was diagnosed with a cyst on a tear duct and given antibiotic eye drops. Told to return in 2 days if the pain hadn't gone. It hadn't so we went back and were given an examination by a Dr who said he couldn't see anything and to stop the drops and leave the eye alone (Friday). It was sore but not swollen for a couple of days, then on the Monday it started swelling again. I bathed it twice a day but that didnt help. Returned to eye casualty on Saturday and they said they thought it was an allergy and to treat it as such. She has had piriton 3x a day since saturday and eye drops recommended by thr pharmacist. This has had no effect, and now the eye is even more painful. She had a routine optician appointment today (she wears glasses) and they looked at the lid of her eye and she was squealing when they were touching it. They said to go back to wye casualty and gave me a letter, went back and no Dr there so saw a nurse consultant who said she also thought it was an allergy but to come back at 9am.

DD says the pain feels like when you get a splinter, and the pain is around the upper eyelid. She says it hurts more now than it did when it started.

We have tried loads of things, including warm compresses , special foam to cleanse the eyelid, drops and bathibg it with cooled boiled water and nothing has helped. Its always more swollen in the morning.

Perhaps orbital cellulitis but with the amount of hcp's that you have seen, I would have expected them to pick that up if likely?

I have no guesses but I would be very surprised if it's an allergy and affects only one eye. Both DD and I have numerous allergies that affect our eyes and both sides are always affected.

Yes they have ruled out cellulitis

How old is she? Could it be rosacea that affects the eye? I don't know much about it except that it often gets missed for a while until you see a specialist who recognises it, and can present with allergy-like symptoms.

But I don't know if she's too young for that?

‘Dry eye’ makes your eye and whole socket swell up and bulge. The tiny ducts in between the lashes get bunged up and the fluid inside that you need dripping into your eye to lubricate it can’t get out. So it keeps getting produced but kept inside the tissue and causes the swelling and redness.

I wonder if it’s a form of that, that the tiny ducts have become blocked.

I few years ago I had the same thing, although I never did find out what it was.

I had a constant feeling like a eyelash was in my eye, it was a stabbing feeling and my eye was very puffy and watery. I did have it for a good while then one day it just went, so I was none the wiser.

Sorry I realise that’s very unhelpful, but I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Could I see an image of the other eye.
Have you seen an ophthalmologist rather than a general doctor in A&E?
Have they managed to look underneath that top eyelid yet?
Any temperature or pain on eye movements?
It does look like a pre-septal orbital cellulitis, but the differential diagnosis would be a foreign body under the lid, potentially causing an allergic type response.

I think she has a tiny grain of foreign material lodged under her upper eyelid

I have rosacea of the eye and mine has never presented like that. Whilst there are some similarities to an allergy, it's more a grittiness and dryness. To me, your DD's problem looks more like an acute issue.

Yes we have seen an ophthalmologist. We have been to eye casualty as our local hospital has a specialist one. They have manages to lift up the lid and look underneath but it was incredibly painful and DD was screaming.

My DD has a form of allergic conjunctivitis that affects her eyes....her eyes swelled up like that as well. .and it mostly her left eye

Does she have a temperature or pain on eye movements? Is her vision okay in that eye (you can check by getting her to look at a small object in the distance and cover one eye and then the other.

There are very limited things that it can be given that it’s only one eye, the eye itself is white and it’s no better 2 weeks later.

I’m sorry, but you need to go back to eye casualty, get them to have another look under that lid again (in case there is a foreign body) and mention pre-septal orbital cellulitis.

Take her to an ophthalmologist. I've had problems with one eye swelling, i also had a lump on my eyeball. Turned out to be episcleritis.

Take her back again. It's ridiculous that they've given you the same diagnosis twice for nothing. Ask for more. You have to push sometimes and run them through everything that's already been done.

It looks so uncomfortable, poor little thing.

I have Horners, which makes my eyelid ache and droop, but not really swollen as such. Are her pupils both the same size and equally reactive to light?

Could it be a processionary moth reaction? Have you been sitting under any Oak trees?

I say this as a total non medical person and have to add take her back to the doc!!

I have allergies and one eye often flares up faster/more than the other.

Does she ever get stringy white/yellow stuff from it - not a discharge, basically the peeling off a membrane from the conjunctiva? You can stretch it between your fingers as it's quite elastic and not like normal 'eye snot'.

Usually an allergic conjunctivitis, but I used to get it as a result of a type of herpes conjunctivitis, sometimes with small lesions in the lash line that were ridiculously painful even though they were tiny.

Try a different anti-histamine and anti-histamine eye drops - they might sting like a bugger but it soon wears off. I used to use simple eye ointment on the lid as it gets sore just from the general discomfort. And dark sunglasses.

How is her eye OP?

It could be a chalazion, I had this and it looked like that, it's a blocked duct under the eyelid
