Starting to get really scared now. I had the root canal procedure done last year with my wonderful dentist in London, don't live in UK now but absolutely need to get the crown done.

What is it like? I'm so scared something will go wrong and the neighbouring teeth nerves will get jangled and will end up in agony! Also not keen on the bit where the shape whatever's left of the tooth by filing it down Sad

How much pain or discomfort will I be in after? For how long?

So scared because I don't know this dentist from Adam I just want my old dentist, I really trusted him Sad

I had no pain or discomfort. They file the remaining tooth into a point. Then they stick the crown over the top. It's nothing compared to a root canal.

The crown is no big deal. It’s the root canal that’s awful. But I don’t even really remember the crown being memorable. It definitely wasn’t really painful. More just a hassle to come back again for another appointment.

Totally fine! So much less stressful than having a root canal. I have two crowns Blush and the only bad bit has been one that was very far back in my mouth so keeping it open was difficult. I feel for you dental work is horrible Sad

It’s definitely fine. Just as PPs describe. Nothing at all like getting a root canal done.

This is the easiest bit. Reducing the tooth won't hurt. You've done the hard part. The worst part now is when they press the crown on so hard that you slide up the chair 😂 but it doesn't hurt.

AbsentmindedWoman · 11/08/2020 20:36

Thanks so much, you are all helping a lot. I'd built it up in my head to something much worse I think!

I just hate bloody dental stuff.

Does it feel weird when they pull off the temp crown thing that's in there at the minute?

I can't imagine how that's going to slide off easily, it feels very fixed in place. The tooth behind it has a large filling I'm wondering if it will be 'harmed' or further damaged (beyond repair?..) if it's a struggle to get the temp crown off?

Hopefully that won't happen though.

You'll be fine the crown fitting is the easiest bit it shouldn't hurt at all.

The dentist will be careful.of your other teeth. It is a weird feeling when they take out the temp crown but it's just a firm pressure.

When rhe crown is fitted the dentist will adjust it to be the best fit with your other teeth. It won't hurt, no nerves will be close to the action.

Good luck!

I am absolutely awful with dentists and I can honestly say getting the crown is fine. You've already done the hard bit with the root canal. You're on the home strait. Hope it goes well

captainprincess · 11/08/2020 21:24

I've just this afternoon spent an hour in the dentists chair and it was actually the most pleasant I've felt for about 3 days as the air con was on!! Almost worth it Wink

modgepodge · 11/08/2020 21:28

I also awful at the dentist OP, after a filling where they anaesthetic hadn’t kicked in when they started drilling. Ever since then (15+ years ago) I’m a wreck whenever I get in the chair. I can hand on heart say having a crown fitted was so untraumatic I can’t remember it! The root canal was awful (not painful but horrible horrible horrible), the crown was absolutely fine.

Goodoldfashionedploverboy · 11/08/2020 21:33

My 4 front teeth were damaged in a boating accident and replaced with crowns, and I’ve had two root canals (on different teeth) so I have extensive experience of this!

As PPs have said, root canals are a million times worse than crown-fittings from the POV of pain / discomfort.

The dentist won’t pull off your temporaries. They will cut them off - it doesn’t hurt at all.

The shaping of your tooth stump to fit the crown onto doesn’t hurt either. They don’t go near any nerves so no adjacent jangling should occur.

I was terrified of dental treatment before I spent six months having a lot of it. You’ve got this OP!

I'm a recovering from / learning how to cope with a dentist phobia. For years I had to be IV sedated to cope with any treatment and my teeth are in a terrible state as a result.

If you've had the root canal done, you've had the big work and the most scary part is over. The crown is like a protective hat over the root canal. It's very simple to take the temporary one off and it doesn't damage what's underneath AFAIK. Honestly, I've had this done in the last few years and was shocked at how straightforward it was.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 12/08/2020 10:40

The temporary crown pops off quite easily, they slip the scrapey thing under the edge and break the seal then you get a sensation like you have a fruit pip or something stuck between your teeth as they push the new one down. Its nothing to worry about, feels a bit odd but there is no pain. The other tooth shouldn't be harmed, there will be space between them, if they got it on, they'll get it off.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 12/08/2020 10:52

I’ve had one fitted this morning. The dentist chipped off the temporary one and there was some tugging, but no pain. They put on the crown, cement it in and hold it for a bit, then check your bite. Sometimes they need a bit of adjustment. She had to file a bit of my bottom tooth this morning, to make sure it fitted properly, but there was no pain and irs actually better, because a bit was chipped off that tooth.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 14/08/2020 20:06

how did it go, OP?
