DD(11) and I have recently discovered anime. Which films have you seen that you recommend? Studio Ghibli seems to do the best ones... so far we've seen and loved:

Totoro
Ponyo
Spirited Away
Howl's moving castle
Castle in the Sky
Kikis delivery service
Princess Mononoke

Less enthusiastic about:

Porco Rosso
Pom Poko
Cat comes back

What should we watch next?

Wolf Children is a lovely film.

I have watched anime, not a huge amount but this is just a warning about your kids looking for anime. Was wondering if stuff like this could pop up inadvertently in a search string as it’s basically cartoons.

There is a subset of anime that is incredibly dodgy with its sexualisation of underage girls right up to actual porn, first is known as Loli and second is Hentai.

Sailor moon is a series, Tokyo mew mew as well

I agree with the other poster you check it out first cuz some animes look cute but plot lines etc can be dodgy

We only look on Netflix/Disney for films, and always as a family. Mostly Studio Ghibli etc. We also check the age rating.

However, we'll make sure we don't let DD look for things by herself on the laptop or anything!

Tales from earthsea

I'm not the biggest fan of anime either but I love Tales from Earthsea, it's one of my all time favourite films 😁

You should be careful looking further afield.
Studio Ghibli isn't really indicative of most anime in that it is mostly family friendly, whimsical and are feature films, whereas the bulk of anime releases are tv series and I'd say over 70% are only suitable for older teens and upwards.

Even seemingly innocent anime may have sexualised fanservice like ridiculously big boobed women and girl characters or panty shots.

The nearest anime series to studio Ghibli I can think of is Natsume's book of friends.
I've watched the first 3 series, they are charming but some episodes can be a bit creepy.

An age appropriate anime series I would recommend which has no dodgy stuff is K-on!
It's about some high school girls who form a rock band. The soundtrack is great too. You can probably find it dubbed as it is really popular, but I always watch Japanese with subtitles so I don't know for sure.

Fruitsbaskets has got a bit of romance in it. Your Lie in April mentioned upthread is a romantic tearjerker. Tribe Cool Crew, about street dance. Carole and Tuesday is good about 2 female musicians, good soundtrack again. Laid Back Camp and Silver Spoon are good. Little Witch Academia is suitable too.

For adventure anime there is Hunter x Hunter, Full Metal Alchemist etc, but this genre can get darker through the episodes.

Asobi Asobase is a good comedy for gross out humour.

Good sports animes are Crossgame, Prince of tennis, Slamdunk, Kaleidostar. Sports animes are normally very moral aswell; about overcoming adversity for example.

There are many new anime series and sequels released every season. Its a huge area of entertainment.

Hope you find something for your daughter to enjoy. You could find some series for yourself aswell!

Myself and my DP are currently binge watching Attack on Titan. It's a bit too intense for an 11 year old though but maybe one for the future, or one for you to watch yourself. It's soooo good though.

Sweetpetrichor my dds absolute favourites that she rewatches are Attack on Titan and Tokyo Ghoul!

Lots to look up and consider there, as well as warnings to heed! It seems that there will be plenty for DD to enjoy into her teens, if it's not suitable now. (And some I hope she never watches by the sounds of it!)

Would be nice to find another My Neighbour Totoro - type film!

Naruto is liked in here, as is fairy tale, but that is one with huge boobed girls. My Dd liked Free!. It's a swimming anime, but the guys in trunks might have had a lot to do with why she liked it.
Nausicaa is good, too.
My kids have all loved Bleach and Deathnote, but they are a bit much for an 11 year old, tbh. Things like Pretty Cure are good at that age.

I love Demon Slayer but it's probably not for children!

Load Back Camp is a wonderful series about friends camping (also called Yuri Camp I think)

Also, just fyi to a PP, Loli is short for Lolita and it's a fashion (nothing to do with the novel) and there's nothing sexual about it. Some anime may have sexualised characters that wear Lolita, but the fashion itself is not
