Anyone know how to find someone on Ancestry UK?

Aaghhh I've hit a brick wall - probably because I'm not very good at researching and finding stuff on there!

I can find grandparents going back to 1760 so far so why can't I find my husbands father? I can find his marriage certificate but nothing like his birth certificate which is what I want

Any one got any tips for me please?

Possibly it's a simple as the name being indexed wrongly. Have you tried searching on other sites such as FreeBMD?

Did your husband's father have any siblings? If you can find a birth cert for one of them, it will give you the same info.

Speaking from experience of my own family, is it possible the name on his marriage certificate isn't the name his birth was registered under? Just this week I've come across someone who was registered as Eleanor, was recorded as Nellie later, was married as Helen, and became Helena later on. And someone else who switched between her father's name and stepfather's name.

Too recent? freeBMD might be a place to look first.

PM me and I'd be happy to try to help.

Yes he has one brother - he's totally non contact though (no major exciting reasons why!) which means he can't simply ask. His dad hasn't been around for 40 odd years so it's tricky with only knowing a few details

I can definitely find his dads marriage certificate and I know that's correct. And I can find his brothers last address but nothing that concrete goes anything together

Thank you for the offer of help! I will drop you a line if you don't mind @CokeEnStock

I also don't understand the way that sometimes it makes it nice and easy for you and FINDS THE PEOPLE FOR YOU! It just pops in the parents etc and I like that

It may be that it's too recent as pp has said. Or a quirk in missing records.

I struggled to find one of my gf's parents for ages on there, and I had no idea what their first names were. Went off down other branches of family, kept coming back and hitting possibilities that didn't seem right. In the end I remembered the name of a great uncle and found him, with his obituary and a picture completely as I remembered him. Unlocked everything from there. There seems to be birth information for all the brothers except my gf, though there's census and church records for him. He was in the middle of them too, not eldest or youngest which makes it really odd.

Is he dead? It is very difficult to find living people (good, really). But you may just not have the precise info to get the birth details.

That's interesting swedish at the time I was trying to find my gf birth certificate he was the only one of his brothers still alive (no sisters). That may explain the odd quirk

LostInAForest · 01/08/2020 21:09

I don't believe he is dead, no. But that's not a definite. On balance, I think alive

I just the dots would easily connect up once I had his marriage certificate details and a nice clickable name .. but doesn't take me anywhere

I think you'd have to used FreeBMD and then order the certificate. You won't (or you'd find it hard to) find the dob of a living person that easily online unless owns a business and on Company's House, I think. If there is a way, I'd love to know as have a brick wall myself over a living relative.

LostInAForest · 01/08/2020 21:24

How silly of me to think it would be easier to find living people over dead 😀
