What's London like at the moment?

I'm in the Midlands and usually take my kids to London when we have a few days off.

Obviously, in the current times it s not that straightforward. So I wanted to ask, what is central London like at the moment please? Are the museums and parks open? What about restaurants and cafes? Is it worth doing a mini break there now or not?

Kids are primary school age and we normally do the Science museum, Diana memorial Gardens, British museum, etc.

It's a great time to visit as it's so quiet.
Some of the museums are opening next week but others aren't yet eg Science museum so you need to check. But places like The Tower of London are open. It's very quiet everywhere so personally I would I think it is a very good and safe time to visit.

Today, it's damned hot!

You need to check online for the places you are interested in visiting, because they are controlling numbers and you will (probably) need to book

Lots of cafes and restaurants are open, as are supermarkets and delis if you want to buy stuff for a picnic in a park.

Round South Ken could be good (not been there myself for a while) as it's near the museums which are opening (already or soon), Hyde Park and lots of eateries and delis

It's hot so everyone is cranky. Buses are still fairly busy so social distancing not great. Museums apparently you have to book a time slot. Eating places like McDonalds are open but mostly just takeaway and a lot of public seating has been removed so you have to to eat sat on the ground.
Wait until next year.

I went on my own on Tuesday and it felt a bit weird, to be honest. Took me ages to find a loo when I needed one. Masks making people hot and cranky. I actually abandoned my original plan and came home early.

bookmum08 · 31/07/2020 10:59

Oh yes. Public loos. A lot are closed.

SquirmOfEels · 31/07/2020 11:02

I think they're open in the Royal Parks - not been, but they used to be on turnstile at 20p a go. At least one loo I've used, which is normally pay, is free for the duration (pay barrier permanently open)

Eerily quiet. Those restaurants and cafes that are open are serving people at outdoor tables wherever possible. Attractions are gradually opening but free timed tickets are invariably required (see websites).

Feels very quiet but also much more doable. Camden market for food is open but quiet so you can get a table. The zoo is fantastic with such low numbers too. I think it's actually a really good time to see the sights as there's no crowds.

blurpityblurp · 31/07/2020 11:21

The loos in Richmond Park are open and free.

The tube isn’t too busy outside of rush hour. Overground trains are much quieter.

Thanks everyone! Will check with kids and see how they feel. A change of scenery might be good for us.

Very quiet. It's nice to visit although not everything is open. I went to the Tower of London yesterday and it was virtually empty. Science Musuem reopens on 19th and many more are in the next few weeks so it's going to get busier I assume. We live in zone 6 but we're going to stay up in Covent Garden next weekend as rooms in central London are so cheap. We've got 3 rooms for 2 nights and are paying £300 total.

Lacey2019 · 31/07/2020 12:51

After living in London for 8 years - I must say I’ve never seen it so quiet :(

Titsywoo · 31/07/2020 13:10

Diana Memorial Fountain in not going to reopen until social distancing ends which is a shame as my kids love it.
