Best way to close down utility accounts after house sale?

I'm selling an unoccupied house at the moment, and I'm wondering what to do about the gas and electricity, which are still on. I'll need to get the meters read and close the accounts. Do I do this before the new owners take over, or is it better to leave it until they have actually moved in? I don't want to cut off their gas and electricity supply. I'm not sure of the right way to go about this - does anyone know?

Giving the meter readings won’t cut off the supply. Wait until the day the sale goes through, ring with the meter readings and give them a forwarding address to send the final bill to. They will ask for the name of the new owner.

Thank you, Hello! That sounds sensible.
